There's a decidedly literary flavour to this year's Halloween Celebrations at The Fan Museum with the premiere semi-staged rehearsed reading of a new play about the legendary writer of ghostly fiction, Montague Rhodes James.

Set exclusively in James' rooms at Cambridge University during the years between 1894 and 1904, The Laws of Shadows deals with the writer's relationship with his colleague E.F. Benson - who went on to write the Mapp & Lucia novels - and the young artist, James McBryde.

Rich in comedy, period detail, high emotion, and some supernatural chills too (extracts from some of James' classic short stories are also performed by a cast of seven professional actors) The Laws of Shadows offers a perfect seasonal treat. Because of the complex emotional theme, the play is suitable for audiences of over sixteen years.

Author Adrian Drew has written 18 plays - all of which have been staged to capacity audiences and his new play Icicles in the Trees will be touring in the spring of 2014.

His collection of ghostly short stories Shadows on the Fens will be launched to coincide with these performances and a collected edition of his plays, including The Laws of Shadows, will be published next year by Inde-Books.

Admission to the museum on these special evenings is £12.00 and also provides access to our latest exhibition, plus light refreshments during the intermission.

Early booking is essential, as all of the previous ‘In Celebration!’ events have sold out well in advance.

The 'In Celebration!' series of events allow audiences to meet distinguished personalities from the worlds of arts & entertainment and to enjoy informed conversations & performances within one of London’s most historic and beautiful buildings. Light refreshments are served post performance and entry to the museum’s latest exhibition on the evening of each event is included in the price.
