Hijinx Residency with Blind Summit
Date: April 22nd - 26th
Venue: Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
Price: £150
Blind Summit will share their unique way of creating theatre with puppets. We will look at ways of devising and improvising with puppets, creating imagery through object manipulation, the basic making processes that go in the rehearsal room to help create new work and how we make work by "following the puppets". We will cover basic puppetry technique including three-man-operated Bunraku, object manipulation, creating emotion and character through puppetry and integrating puppets into productions.
Blind Summit were founded in 1997. Their work aims to create new puppets in new places in new ways for new audiences. Their work puts puppetry centre stage and is dedicated to developing the role of puppetry in adult theatre. They have brought to life a singing dog in Simon McBurney's A Dog's Heart, a three year old boy in Anthony Minghella's Madam Butterfly, a 18 metre high firework-firing Voldemort in Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening Ceremony and a two foot high puppet prophet with a cardboard head in The Table.
"Blind Summit prove once again that when you're working in miniature you don't have to think small" Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
Working inclusively
The week will also be an experiment in working inclusively. If you have never worked alongside learning disabled performers The Hijinx Residencies are a fantastic opportunity to do so. A number of places at each course will be allocated to students from the Hijinx Academy, our drama training course for talented learning disabled actors. Come ready to work in a lively, empowering and massively enjoyable environment.
