Clowning in the Real World

What if you’re a clown, but you don’t want to make a clown show? What if you’re a clown but you can’t make a clown show? What if you’re just not funny? In this workshop, Joyce Henderson investigates the uses of clowning beyond simply being a clown.

Over the week, the workshop will look at the essential qualities of the clown: naivety and optimism; vulnerability and failure; and, above all, absolute honesty, and ask how these qualities can feed into and inspire all areas of performance. The workshop will have a strong physical emphasis, taking in a traditional movement training as well as play, slapstick, competition, rhythm and observation.

Joyce Henderson trained at Ecole Jacques Lecoq. Her work for Complicite includes Mnemonic, The Three Lives of Lucie Cabrol, The Caucasian Chalk Circle and The Street of Crocodiles. Other acting credits include The Cherry Orchard (Birmingham Rep), Elegy for Young Lovers (Young Vic), Medea (West End, Broadway & Tour), Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare’s Globe), Volpone and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (for NT). Joyce also works as a Director and Movement Director and teaches extensively for Complicite and Circus Space.

Working inclusively
The week will also be an experiment in working inclusively. If you have never worked alongside learning disabled performers The Hijinx Residencies are a fantastic opportunity to do so.  A number of places at each course will be allocated to students from the Hijinx Academy, our advanced drama training course for talented learning disabled actors.  Come ready to work in a lively, empowering and massively enjoyable environment.
