Kids. Chaos. Coffee. Chat. Inspiration. Music. Laughter. Videos. Cake. Drawing. These are just some of the things you might find at West Coast Arts near Tenby at 11am on the second Sunday of the month!

The Sunday Sessions @ West Coast Arts have been set up as a way of bringing a focus on family, friends and community back to Sunday mornings in an increasingly secular society. People of all religious backgrounds are welcome, but there is definitely no religion involved. As one of our members likes to say ‘you don’t need god to be good!’

We’ve been lucky enough to receive a small start-up grant from the National Theatre Wales TEAM project, as well as a commitment to providing advice and other support as we move forward.

The central theme that we try to plan our sessions around is ‘activism through art’. Think beautiful collage created out of plastic washed up on the beach to highlight the issue of waste and litter. Learning about sustainable fishing whilst conjuring up gorgeous smoked salmon snacks (we think cooking is art too!). Or the kids creating model bats while the adults learn about why bats are important (as well as just pretty cool!)

Some sessions will focus on raising awareness of issues with kids, some on adults. Some will be fun. Some will be more serious. Some sessions will be perfect, some less so… this is an experiment to see what works, and hopefully we will be able to pull together a prototype that others across Wales can follow.

Sessions are free to attend, but we do have a contributions pot and ask that people contribute what they can to help us cover costs. We also regularly ask group members to help organise activities!

If you’d like to join us on our journey please like the West Coast Arts page on Facebook and join our ‘Sunday Sessions @ West Coast Arts’ group to get all the latest.

Dreaming of Dahl and the big city…

Even though many of us won’t be able to make the 100 mile journey to the City of the Unexpected celebration in Cardiff this weekend, on what would have been Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday it is good to know that we have still played a part.

Back in May, the Sunday Sessions crew got together to contribute to West Coast Arts’ Family Fayre. We invited families to create BFG inspired dream jars, which TEAM members would take to Cardiff to be distributed around the city as part of the City of the Unexpected celebration.

The dream jars made by the West Coast Art-ers were beautiful, and we are looking forward to trying to spot them on photos and videos of the event. It’s great to know that a little bit of Pembrokeshire will be there – alongside Pembroke Dock’s very own giant Roly-Poly Bird of course!
