Hi John, I've just had a read of the draft guidelines - I think they are very clear and accessible. I don't think NTW should go down the traditional 'script-reading' route as presumably that focus should really lie with organisations such as Sherma…

Hi John, When I was working at the Sherman 10 years ago (was it really that long??!!) I was fortunate enough to get a place on the NT Studio (London) directors course. This was an intensive (and free!) 2 weeks of workshops, show visits and a chance…

Hi guys, I really, really like the sound of this project - it's very much in line with the sort of ideas and territory we've been exploring with Chol in Yorkshire. Tiger Bay / Bute Town is one of the world's culturally richest areas, jammed full of…

Profile Information

A little about me:
Hello! I'm Andrew, currently Director of Chol Theatre, based in Huddersfield, and also freelancing all over. I used to work for the Sherman and keep close links with my friends and colleagues in Wales... I'm currently developing a new performance project with Cardiff-based choreographer Caroline Lamb.

Originally from Belfast, I've worked as a director and theatre maker around the UK and Europe for fifteen years. I enjoy making new theatre that brings artists from different backgrounds together and which seeks to explore how we engage with society and the world around us. My work fuses words, images, live music, digital animation and movement.

I've been Director of pioneering interdisciplinary company Chol Theatre since June 2006. Productions for the Huddersfield-based Chol include ‘Beast Market’, ‘Space Circus’ and ‘Not for all the Tea in China’. Chol Theatre is currently creatively leading on one of the Cultural Olympiad strands for Yorkshire - 'Extraordinary Moves' - making work that explores notions of the moving body, ability, disability and the ethics of sports science and body enchancement. As part of this project, I will be directing a brand new commission from Kaite O'Reilly.

I was previously Artistic Director of Theatre in the Mill, Bradford, from 1999-2003 with a focus on pioneering new work, and the National Student Drama Festival from 2003-2006, a powerhouse of emerging British theatre. I have also worked for the Sherman Theatre, Pilot Theatre, National Theatre Studio, Plymouth Theatre Royal, West Lothian Youth Theatre, Ulster Association of Youth Drama and was lead facilitating artist for Arts Council England’s Young People’s Participatory Theatre project from 2006-2008.

My regular interests include theatre and music of all types, travel, visual art, movies, heritage, going out on the town with friends - and cycling when the weather’s good enough!
