From Screenwriter to Playwright

It's been YEARS since I've been on the NTW community, but I'm back now, looking for information and inspiration as I embark on writing my first professional stage play.  I haven't written a play since 2005 when I wrote a one-act piece for Bridgend County Youth Theatre's Halloween celebration.  I'm currently scripting a two-act two-hander to be performed in Cardiff in spring 2020 followed by a transfer to London and hopefully, a brief New York run. That's the plan anyway.  I'm circling a…See More

Motherlode

Working across Wales and the South West, Motherlode collaborates with an ensemble of actors, writers, musicians, creatives and choreographers to create entertaining, relevant new theatre that is inspired by real life stories. Run by artistic director Rachael Boulton with theatre maker Emma Vickery and producer Nia Skyrme, our first production The Good Earth successfully toured Wales and New York, between August and November 2016, and was shortlisted for two Wales Theatre Awards. We have also…See More

Profile Information

What I do:
Writer- producer, and co-founder of indie production company Seraphim Pictures
A little more about me:
I consider myself first and foremost to be a writer, having taught myself to type on an archaic Atari computer that used an old Grundig TV (remember those?) as a monitor!! I wrote my first novel when I was 16, the second when I was 19, and moved on to scripts when I was 21. I bought my first camcorder when I was sixteen, unknowingly starting a chain of events which would see me thrown in with a lot of talented drama types, seeing a bit of the world, and ultimately starting my own business...
Location:
Bridgend/Cardiff
Projects I’m working on:
Currently writing a play for performance in Cardiff and hopefully London and New York in spring/summer 2020.

A little about my company:

I'm one of the directors of Seraphim Pictures - a small production partnership with a list of documentaries, music videos, short films and corporate movies under our belt. Although we're primarily interested in filming, we're now exploring the possibilities of mixed media productions that combine film and theatre...

You can find out more about the company on our website and read a brief list of our credits on the IMDB (here if you've got IMDB Pro).

We've always embraced social networking as a way of making contacts and developing our branding - we started out on Myspace before our website was set up - and we're pretty much everywhere:

Novel or Script?

I'd never had doubts about which way to tell a story until this year.  I always knew from the start whether something was going to be a novel, a stageplay, screenplay, or short (both story and film).  I know that other people sometimes have a dilemma in choosing which format to tell their story but it's never been a problem for me.

This changed a few months ago (August? September?) when I woke up at stupid o'clock and wrote a short film in an hour and a quarter.  Just like…

NaNoWriMo Fail

I first heard of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2010 and liked the idea of committing to writing 50,000 words from November 1st right through to the 30th.  So long as I had the research, characterisation etc. done by the first (which might actually have been cheating) it would've been easy enough to plod along through it.

Everything was ready, inspiration was sky high.  Started out with a few thousand words on Day 1 just to kick off.  A few hundred words on Day…

PRESS RELEASE: BAFTA-WINNING DIRECTOR TO HELM THE FINAL PUNCHLINE

Well the weeks are rolling by quickly and its about time we started attaching people to the project.  We're drawing up a list of names for casting, being realistic about who we can afford within the budget.  In the meantime we've found our director; the press release is going out today:

No worries Daniel - you are not alone! I have put a couple of blogs up about Sandpit, so have a look on my profile and they might help. Basically the Sandpit is where people get together to play games. It started with people who played ARGs (Alternate Reality Games), which you may have heard of in your film/publicity/marketing experiences.

The games mix theatre, visual arts, films, to provide an experience that is immersive, fun and theatrical.

The games might be theatrical (talking to characters to follow clues), they might be technical (following a map described through mp3 and making a video of your journey). They might be negotiating and cognitive games like moving a lounge-set without being seen by guards between Bute Park to Queen St! Sandpit is an evening where different people come together to try out new games that are in development and play games they enjoy. It's about seeing how games or these 'immersive experiences' can mix with theatre/film/visuals to create performances where the participants or players are also the audience. Maybe the best way to find out about it is to come along? We will be holding this Sandpit in July with the aim to develop games/artists/makers between then and a second Sandpit in September, which will feature games and experiences developed by Welsh-based people. It sounded like your kind of thing from your interests and experience in film/tv and you sound like the sort of visual person we would love to have with us x

Hi Daniel, welcome to National Theatre Wales! Great to see you on here and thanks for replying to the Introduce Yourself discussion! From reading your info, I thought that you would be exactly the sort of person who we should have at our Sandpit Event on 2 July. Have you read about it? It may be exactly the sort of thing you may be interested in (ie theatre crossing art forms with games, video etc). x
