Profile Information

What I do:
Social Design Ethnographer | Research/Data Scientist | Social Media Curator | Communications and Learning Consultant | Artist
A little more about me:
I work at the intersection of social learning and digital participation. Some days I am hanging out with people, others I am crunching large sets of social data or writing essays and poetry. If anything I've learned in my years, it is how stories are told not just with words, images and movement ... but also with numbers, statistics and code.

I work with individuals and organizations interested in learning how they can be more effectively social. I completed my doctorate in the Psychology of Web Technology many moons ago in Australia. This gave me a solid foundation to explore people and our connectedness to social technologies, our social data and information we share. I am passionate about working with people to develop their vision, voice and social ways to live, work and learn. And the more creative and artistic the project, the more excited I am about it.

I have collaborated with both academic and industry partners, the including across the following sectors: i) Digital, creative & communications (NativeHQ, ADMCi, MediaSnackers, HuwDavid Design, Digital Analytics Association, The Campaign Palace, DoubleClick Australia); ii). Education, non-profit/social good (Youth Crossroads Inc., CiTE, Insight Labs, The Third Teacher Plus, Cardiff University); iii) Arts & culture (Blast Theory, National Theatre Wales, NoFitState Circus, The Space Movement Project, Arts & Business Council Chicago, Hedwig Dances, Redmoon Theater, London Southbank Centre); and iv). Public sector (Berwyn Parks District, DWP).

In addition to writing industry and organizational reports, I have published in academic journals such as: Journal of Business Research, Studies in Higher Education, Computers in Human Behavior, International Journal of Interactive Marketing, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Psychology & Marketing, Behavior & Information Technology, International Journal of Retailing & Distribution Management, Marketing Review, Strategic Change, Journal of Marketing Mgt, Journal of Consumer Behaviour. In 2011 I opened TedxCardiff with my talk on "Rediscovering Friendship." A talk on how people enact friendship through media.

I work from Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago, but I lived for over 9 years in Wales after growing up in Australia. I've delivered workshops, colloquia, talks & creative projects in Wales, England, Scotland, France, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Canada, Australia & the USA. So in short, I like to travel and work. I am an associate at NativeHQ (the team responsible for the initial design for this awesome community) and I am consultant for the Arts and Business Council (A&BC) of Chicago. Last year I was also appointed as board director at Youth Crossroads, (YC) Inc., an organization that works with at risk youth in the western suburbs of Chicago.

My Inspiration: Marshal McLuhan

Many years ago I came across the work of a media philosopher Marshal McLuhan. In the 1960's he envisioned a networked society where the message and meaning within community would be influenced by the medium by which it was exchanged.

At this time he was talking about Radio and Television. Today we are seeing and experiencing with the social web the very essence of what he espoused.

Karen: Invisible Threads are the Strongest Ties

In the design of systems it is often what we cannot see that is the most valuable. In our emotional design as people it is the trillions of molecules that inform our feelings about who we connect to and why. In the design of our workplaces and social gatherings it is the air of culture that floats around us forged through our…

The year was 1904, and she was appointed as a Professor of Education at Cardiff University.

For International Women's Day in 2013, I was approached by…
