Hello, I’m Lesa.

I love being part of creating something new. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of being able to imagine and realise possibilities, open up opportunities and contribute to shaping a world of unexpected personal and creative collisions. Imagine that! Who wouldn’t want to have that in mind as motivation to get them out of bed every day?

I am delighted to be working with National Theatre Wales as Communications Consultant. I grew up in Salford, Greater Manchester, UK and I came on holiday to Wales every year of my childhood, to Golden Sunset Caravan Park in Benllech, close to Red Wharf Bay, Pentraeth. I discovered what I thought was a secret walk along what seemed to me as a child to be steep and mysterious cliff tops, down to a glorious golden sandy beach where I spent hours rock-pool hunting for sea creatures. A childhood full of discovery, adventure, imagination and happiness at the seaside in Wales.

I’ve worked in the cultural and creative industries for over 20 years and founded my own small business, Stop The Pigeon in 2002. I love developing brand identities, marketing, public relations, coaching, facilitation and mentoring. Why? Because I am fascinated by people, their personal creativity and the way that can influence and bring joy, reflection, connection and different viewpoints to our world.

I live in Manchester now, and first became fascinated with theatre when I saw Robert Lindsay perform Hamlet in jeans and a Tshirt at the Royal Exchange Theatre. I thought to myself at that time, twenty five years ago at the age of seventeen...so theatre can be about Tshirts and jeans, not period costume and wigs? Wow! It can actually relate to me and my life? I was hooked!

I have great pleasure and pride today to be part of shaping the future of theatre in Wales. I am passionate about the power of creative expression and the connections that can make with the world and with each other. I am angry about mass consumer consumption and believe in finding a more meaningful way of making sense of the world. I own a 1993 Volvo 480, but hardly ever drive, choosing to travel in a more environmentally sustainable way on buses and trains and, my preferred mode of travel, my bicycle – although, I consider myself to be the world’s slowest cyclist!

I've just completed a Clore Leadership Programme, an initiative to strengthen leadership in the cultural sector. If you want to know more about the kind of work I do, visit www.cloreleadership.org

Thanks for reading my profile. I’ve shared a lot about myself with you, not something I’m normally all that comfortable with, but hey, this is about getting to know each other and making friends, isn’t it? I look forward to reading about and getting to know you.

The birth of a new company

It's been an exciting week! I've been working with National Theatre Wales artistic director John E McGrath since last November 2008, dreaming about how the newly forming National Theatre Wales will take it's first steps into the big wide world. Since then, I've met the amazing Board of Trustees who started all this off I'm told as long ago as 2007 (thanks to Phil George), with a first meetng early in 2008. I've watched the staff team grow since January 2009 from one to six people and I've been… Continue
