Hi Phil my name’s Gareth Tempest. I’m 20 years old, from Newport and am currently in my final year of training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
A major part of our final year is meeting agents and casting directors and our showcase in London, all of which I’ve been prepping over the Christmas break. Probably the biggest part of that prep is finding monologues. As a result of this I started writing to Welsh writers trying to attain copies of their scripts. It proved to be a very successful search and got me really interested and excited about Welsh writers, new works being created in Wales and the National Theatre. Whilst at home I was talking to a friend I’ve done some work for, named Martin Kurzik, who said he’s worked with you and recommended writing to you. I was just wondering whether you could possibly answer some questions I had?
I’m really intrigued as to the creation process and how the plays are chosen and devised within the National Theatre of Wales? Also I appreciate it’s quite a long shot but was wondering if there would be any way of coming in and observing any rehearsals, just to help me see the way people are working in theatre in Wales? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
