Work at Welsh National Opera as Nicholas John Dramaturg
A little more about me:
At WNO I write and translate the surtitles for all new productions, produce programme notes and deliver pre-performance talks. I am also a director and recently won an Arts Council of Wales grant to explore Brechtian theatre techniques alongside excerpts from Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins with professional singers as part of a collaboration with Cardiff University. I studied French and Russian at University and have worked as an assistant director/translator on several opera productions, including at the Royal Opera House, Theatre du Capitole, Toulouse and Opera Comique Paris. Dramaturgical experience includes 'The Fairy Queen Re-imagined' (a multimedia, experimental take on Henry Purcell's opera at West Road Concert Hall), and WNO/National Trust 'Fact and Fiction' events, interweaving Donizetti's music with historical texts and Schiller's 'Mary Stuart'.
Location:
Cardiff!
Projects I’m working on:
An original story for an opera libretto based on The Snow Queen, with a Slavic twist!
I took a tour of Cardiff Theatrical Services with Darren Joyce. CTS build a huge quantity of sets for WNO and beyond, including lots of NTW productions - most recently the fab Silly Kings). Read at the link below for more info!
