Hi All,

Compliments of the season to you.

We were wondering if anyone out there might know of a storage space going for flats etc. We have the Shirley Valentine and Aberystwyth Mon Amour set looking for storage space and we were hoping we could find a convenient home for it.

If anyone's got any idea, could you let us know here or at lighthousetheatreltd@gmail.com?

Since last we posted, we have got our team of creatives together, we have cast the show, we have printed the posters and are putting the finishing touches to the promo...watch this space!

So: the cast is Non Haf and Vern Griffiths, with Sonia and myself. We have Joe Harmston as director and Sean Cavanagh as designer. Tic Ashfield is composing the music, Daniel Taylor is designing the lights and Tony Davies the sound. Finally, but in NO way least, Lisa Briddon will be the DSM - looking forward to the adventure now...

Bells of Santiago

On the 8th of December 1863, a fire raged through the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús in Santiago, Chile, which claimed the lives of over 2,500 souls. It was started by something nothing more dangerous than a candle, knocked over by a choir boy, but it was and remains the worst death toll from fire in history.

This was the era of long-standing trading partnerships between Swansea and Chile, built and strengthened by the famous Cape Horners from Swansea docks.

Following the fire, the bells of the church that had lain for weeks in the rubble were bought and transported back to Swansea by the Vivian Family of Swansea – copper smelters and one of the controllers of the trade of the Valley. The bells were transported in a ship called The Zeta and were given by Vivian to a number of churches in exchange for their bells (he was building his own stately home). All Saints Church in Oystermouth received three, other were given to churches of St. James in Ffynone and Neath.

In many ways, the stories rung by these bells could tell the histories of Swansea and Santiago.

The final journey of these bells was in 2010 – back to Santiago in Chile, the bi-centenary of Chile’s independence.

The tragedy, hardship and drama of this story make for a powerful piece of story-telling. It is our intention, after several visits to Santiago, to research and develop a short piece for Key Stage Two level that will be performed in schools in Swansea and the valley as part of the Swansea International Festival.

Further to this we intend to work in partnership with The Welfare, CCS and the Festival to create a full-length touring show that tells the tale of the two communities and their combined struggles.

Devised and performed by the company, the cast includes Rachel Fenwick, Sonia Beck, Roger Delves-Broughton, James Scannell and Huw Novelli under the direction of Derek Cobley. The music is composed by Stacey Blythe with sound design by Tony Davies.

Now, what I want is..FACTS!

That's almost the first line of Stephen Jeffreys' adaptation of Charles Dickens' Hard Times. It is a masterful adaptation of a masterful novel. And in these times, it seems entirely appropriate.

We've loved this version for years and have always wanted to do it, and now with the collaboration of Pontardawe Arts Centre, the Arts Council and Ty Cerdd, we're giving it a go.

We're lucky enough to have on board the lovely Joe Harmston as director. Joe and we have worked together many times over the years and we're sure that he will bring his customary vision, energy, drive and passion to the rehearsal room for this one too.

Over the next few weeks, I will be charting the development of a show from the producer's perspective - a producer's diary, if you will! What producers do is quite often not understood (I know I didn't understand it when I started after acting!), and although I don't profess to be great at it, it might help to have a small window on the process of everything that goes on BEFORE you get to the rehearsal room...

Speak soon,

Lighthouse Theatre in Swansea is casting the following roles in its forthcoming theatre tour of Malcolm Pryce's adaptation of his Welsh Noir cult novel Aberystwyth Mon Amour.

The script is a world premiere and follows Louie Knight - Aberystwyth’s only private detective - for 24 hours, as he unravels the case of the missing schoolboy, Evans the Boot, and uncovers a plot which threatens the very existence of Aberystwyth itself.

The engagement is for three weeks of rehearsals and three weeks of touring from base. The tour is mainly one-nighters throughout Wales including Swansea Grand Arts Wing; The Castle Theatre, Aberystwyth; The Hafren, Newtown; The Pontardawe Arts Centre; The Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli; The Lyric, Carmarthen and The Congress Theatre, Cwmbran. Actors will be expected to assist in get-ins and get-outs and a Swansea/South Wales base for the duration is essential.

A company wage of £393.00 per week is offered. This is not an Equity contract.

We are looking for versatile actors who are great company members with excellent comedy skills who can bring to life the extraordinary world of the novel. All characters have native Welsh accents

Director: Abigail Anderson

Overall dates: August 30th – October 8th 2016.

Auditions in the Swansea Grand Theatre on May 31st, and June 1st and 2nd.

Closing Date for Applications – 20th May 2016.

Calamity Jane - F 18 - 25.

Louie's 15 year old side-kick and aspiring detective. Tomboy trying to be a tough wise-cracker, but still just a school kid underneath. Doubles with Brainbocs, the nerdy school-boy criminal mastermind.

Herod Jenkins – M 55 – 65.

The school games teacher of your nightmares and Louie’s nemesis. A sadistic bully and military enthusiast who enjoys terrorising his charges. A bruising presence in league with the Druids, and with designs on controlling the town.

Doubles with Iolo Davies, the seedy, bumbling museum curator turned Punch and Judy man.

Dylan Thomas' Return Journey marks the culmination of five years of work on Thomas' masterful broadcast and seems to be a fitting legacy in the 75th year since the Three Nights' Blitz that inspired it.

At 9.30am, we will begin our final performance on the streets of Swansea, and it will be quite emotional when we get to Cwmdonkin Park for the final time. The last time I recite the words to Hunchback In The Park will be very special indeed.

Still, people will still be able to enjoy the show and the accompanying tour of Swansea by downloading the 'app'. It has been made in conjunction with the fabulous Telesgop and is a mystery to me...technology!

It has the voices of all of the actors who have worked on this show with us, the information contained in all of the programmes and a lot more besides.

Performing Return Journey has been very special.

By creating the 'app' and making it available to so many more people, we hope to allow many more of his fans enjoy this unjustifiably neglected work.
