The Land

“Sometimes unkind, often daft and almost always muddy” Polly Morland, Risk Wise

‘The Land’ is a playground in North Wales, set up by Claire Griffiths. The kids at ‘The Land’ are creators of their play space, they decide what goes up and what comes down. The space organically ebbs and flows to the beat of their drum. Because of this ‘The Land’ feels alive, dynamic and full of potential and possibility.

We walked through the gates and the first thing we encounter is a young boy striding past, pick axe in hand. There is a huge fire blazing at the back of the playground, tended by a play-worker and young 9 year old girl. The place looks like a shanty town crossed with a skip. The kids acknowledge our existence but really aren’t that interested in us. They are far more interested in building dens, running up, over and through the maze of pallets and we don’t blame them, it looks like a lot of fun.

Chatting with Claire we discover there are no rules at ‘The Land’ apart from ‘don’t burn plastic’. Every single part of the playground has a thick risk benefit file on it. The risk benefits always far out way the risk. This is Key. There is a fundamental understanding that taking risks is beneficial and far out ways the ‘actual risk’. In a risk adverse society its understandable why people find this approach so hard to stomach. It’s telling that in the past 7 years since ‘The Land’ began the most serious accident there has been is a sprained ankle. Kids are good at managing their own risk.

There are normally no more than 3 play workers on duty at anyone time. They occur more like grounds keepers than land owners. They let the kids work out things for themselves and only ever step in if it looks like things are hazardous. They aren’t there to tell the kids off or tell them what to do. They remove hazardous nails and might help make a structure more secure. The rest is down to the kids. The four of us find this mind-blowing and very exciting! As a kid summersaults of a pile of tires , and one runs past with a hammer its hard to get one’s head around. ‘The Land’ has a raw, energised, untamed feel about it. The kids that are playing appear confident, loud and are having a blast. This is very much their kingdom.

Since appearing in the Guardian article Claire has had what she described as ‘tourists’ visiting the playground. Parents bringing their children to ‘The Land’ because they want their child to experience risk. ‘The Land’ isn’t a theme park. This is a play scheme that these kids have grown up with. What happens when a child new to this type of play encounters this environment? What examples of play, adventure and exploration of risk taking can we take in to theatrical/immersive experience to families totally new to this type of environment.

One 4 year old boy stands on the top of a concrete tube (you know the kind, the ones banned from playgrounds years ago for being to dangerous). He is about a meter off the ground. He’s looking down nervously at a mattress. His mum stands at the end of mattress not saying anything just watching. You can see by the look on his face that the drop for him looks like 100’s of meters. He asks ‘shall I’ to which his mum replies ‘it’s up to you’. He looks back down at the mattress. After a few more thoughtful moments he leaps off. His face lights up with a huge smile and he runs around to climb straight back up to jump again.

The four of us were overwhelmed and excited by this place and our short time here. Its full of potential, possibility, story and adventure. The idea of creating a world with pallets, tires, tubes, rope and mud that can be manipulated by cast and audience is a very exciting possibility. The potential is there to have an interactive installation that grows over a week as kids play, build, create. How can a narrative be woven in to this? How do we capture what excites us about being here? The materials, the mud, the quickness and ease that dens are built up and destroyed, the freedom and physical confidence the kids exhibit in their play, the absence of ‘gown ups’! We defiantly have more questions than answers which is very exciting.

I’m having a little mini freak out because I have an internal conflict going on. This isn’t unfamiliar territory. This is standard ‘starting a new project’ territory.

I’m starting work on a project about courage, fear and taking risks. Ironically I find myself challenged by the very thing that i want to make work about.

The original idea for this project was to make a small touring show that can fit in a small suitcase.

After an amazing WalesLab week I’ve stumbled over and exploded in to, some really exciting possibilities for a totally different sort of show. By the end of the week we were excitedly talking about creating an installation piece using pallets, tyres, rope, tubing and what ever we can salvage from local companies, to create, or rather facilitate young people in creating their own kingdom of dens, walkaways, slides, forests, whatever their imagination leads them to build. Within that creation time and play we weave a narrative about taking risks and finding ones courage. This can be something that grows over a few days or a week. Each performance building on, adapting or destroying what came before.

This show definitely doesn’t fit in a small suitcase.

I have an internal conflict between the desire to keep it super simple for myself and the desire to really go for it and see what this collaboration can create. What we are now talking about is really exciting and rich. The work involved in making this happen, whatever this is, seems unattainable, overwhelming and mystifying.

The kitchen floor is paced and another cup of tea brewed.

It’s the scale that breaks me out in a cold sweat. The bigger the scale the bigger the potential to totally fuck it up. With a solo show its only myself to let down. Says a lot about how I think things are going to go!

Building a team, looking after that team, nurturing a creative process that’s organic and open and gives space for ideas to breath and grow. Creating a process that doesn’t crush people’s creative input through inexperience is a lot of responsibility. What if I am only capable of managing a small suitcase.

The brilliant Simon Coates gave me some great advice, ‘be confident in your confusion’ I love this and carried this with me through the WalesLab week. Does the same apply to inexperience? Can I be confident in my inexperience and ask others to be confident in my inexperience, to take a risk on me, the project?

It all comes back to Fear. This is all fear talking. I really care about the themes we are exploring and I can’t make a show about taking risk without taking a few risks along the way! My suitcase is always going to be there waiting for me to pick it back up again.

In my original short storytelling of ‘Paper Bag Girl’ she is given a book on how to find her confidence with 3 simple rules.

I was fortunate to be one of the Summer Campers this year and had the time and space to start talking to people and investigating creatively what this topic means for me. Inspired by the Jetty at the fort I wanted to capture mermaids playing in the water. There is something about how Water supports the body and in water we forget about what the body looks like and we use the body to move us through the water and play. The water supports us. After a brilliant conversation about my investigation, with the talented writer Catrin Clarke, she wrote me this beautiful piece of writing.

The story so far: The traditional tale of the Queen and Prince’s search for a “real” Princess, using a humble garden pea, takes place in the background of our story. Our story is set instead in the mud of the Palace Gardens , and the lives of the Royal Gardener’s two daughters, Mary and Sweet-pea. Mary is an ordinary teenager, trying to figure out what she wants from life. Her younger sister Sweet-pea thinks she knows exactly what her big sister needs. With the help of a big imagination, and a very lonely Prince, Sweet-pea sets about trying to turn Mary’s life into a fairy-tale...

After an initial development period and a couple of showings of the work to an audience the company are looking to develop further a couple of specific aspects of the piece. As part of the ensemble the actors create a soundscape for the show using voice, various objects and simple instruments. It is clearly something that can be developed further and has lots of exciting potential within the piece. To help us do this we are looking for a sound designer. We try to create as much of the soundscape live but are also interested in looking at mixing that in with recorded sound. The opportunity for a designer would be to collaborate with us to create a live soundscape for the show. The bad news is that there is no budget for this and no fee. However, it would be a good opportunity to get in early with the company and make a case to work on the show when they secure funding or, at the very least, to work on other shows further down the line.

The date of the development week is the 7th-11th of December. Please get in touch even if you are only available for one or two days. Your ideas and inspiration over the course of one day would be invaluable.

If there are some people interested, I would be happy to talk more to them.
