Summary of story so far

Charlie and TJ have built up a rapport and discovered some common ground - in their frustrations with their respective families and where their lives are heading next.

The two
originally met online at the end of June and figured it would be fun to
meet up. Charlie is a Prestatyn boy who has spent several years living
in Russia but now had that cut short and gone back to live in Prestatyn.
TJ originates from Merthyr and after some false starts is now toying
with the idea of pursuing a career as a photographer.

At the time of
writing they've just come back from a fun-packed road trip around Wales.

Gaming meets theatre... Or is it vice-versa?

GDD

At the moment Rhiannon, Bethan
and I are working on refinements to our game design document, which is the definitive guide to everything that can happen in the course of The Beach game.

The game design document - or GDD - is like a script I suppose because there are characters, a backstory, a story and "stage directions". There are also rules. Our GDD for The Beach also has beachy photos of Prestatyn, tide times, specs for online activities and a list of "undecided elements" which is shrinking (hooray!) as we develop the ideas.

We have been using Google Docs which are a very useful way of writing a document as a team without having to clumsily juggle email attachments. There's just one version of the document which the team can access via the web. You can revisit old versions of the document or export it as a file. Try it!

Play tests

We have invited people to several play test sessions.

(There are some happening in June if you want to come and play! Locations TBA but details on the
blog soon.)

What is a play test? A play test is a trial run of the game, with some helpful volunteers and usually with rough and ready props. As a game designer you keep an eye on how people act in a hope to gauge responses to various challenges and themes.

Afterwards we ply the volunteers with questionnaires to see how everything went. Then we go back to scribbling based on what we've learned.

In gaming you can't stay theoretical for long, it must be practised and
tested and ripped apart in order for it to have any lasting value. Play, play, play.

In theatre terms, a play test is more akin to a workshop than a full
blown rehearsal.

That said we will have rehearsals too in July. Hopefully we'll be tweaking rather than revamping by that point.

Actors and theatre

Gaming can be a theatrical experience whether or not actors are used. (To paraphrase our director Catherine Paskell.)

For The Beach we have decided to work with a small number of actors. This wasn't a foregone conclusion or something that it intrinsic to every game but it was something we thought fitted the needs of the project.

If it's the kind of game that uses actors performing as characters, one learning that stood out for me was the exact role of a character in the game. The same person cannot explain the minutiae of the game rules and also stay in character. It would break the magic. Therefore the designer should choose a number of different means of informing the players which don't always depend on their being told directly (insight from Alex Fleetwood).

Success here is to see people playing, enjoying and being absorbed by the game. The game designer needs to have thought of every eventuality and then become invisible to the player.
Google celebrates Pacman today - and you can playtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2010-05-21:3152760:BlogPost:322822010-05-21T15:00:00.000ZCarl Morrishttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/CarlMorris

There is a lot of experimentation in pervasive mobile gaming right now.

There's still a certain novelty and the long-term appeal of games that rely heavily on this is uncertain. Witness the mobile game Foursquare, which could just be viewed as a ploy to get people to gather valuable
geodata for free.

If you're looking for something a little more edgy, have a look at Blowtooth:

Blowtooth has been developed to explore the limits of pervasive gaming in public spaces where the constant surveillance of law-abiding and innocuous behaviour has become the everyday norm.

The game is specifically designed to exploit the affordances of a particular class of public space - namely international airports - in which people are subject to particularly high levels of intrusive surveillance and security monitoring. Even in everyday experience (i.e. outside of a game) such surveillance can be both simultaneously thrilling and frightening; the possibility of harnessing these sensations in a game - or indeed any other art form - has great potential.

Blowtooth is further designed with a fictional narrative theme that is deliberately provocative given the environment in which it is set i.e. the game-play involves the covert smuggling of drugs through airport security checks. In reality, of course, no drugs are involved and the game simply polls a player's vicinity for Bluetooth devices, produces a list of these devices and allows the player to conceptually dump or retrieve contraband on or off one or more devices in the list. No interaction with the other devices - or their owners - is made other than to discover the anonymous and factory allocated hardware addresses.

Obviously, be extremely careful not to brag about your achievements in the game within earshot of airport staff.

According to some reports, people have already had travel problems for mentioning it on Twitter.

Blowtooth is available now for the iPhone with an imminent release for phones which run Android, e.g. Google's Nexus One.
A glimpse of Prestatyn Parish Church and graveyardtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2010-05-01:3152760:BlogPost:310482010-05-01T14:30:00.000ZCarl Morrishttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/CarlMorris

Some provocative points about theatre and social media in a Lyn Gardner blog post this week.

Sample paragraph:

The answer is clearly for theatres to embrace social media in all its forms, and use their natural creativity to do it well. That doesn't simply mean a website on which theatregoers can see what's playing and
buy tickets, or maybe read a blog (which is often a thinly disguised bit
of puffery written by some poor actor during rehearsals). Neither does
it mean tweeting nice things about your own show. It means creating
sites that are as lively, reciprocal and outward-looking as any other
forms of social media, that draw people in and make them want to stay
and poke about. And it means creating a relationship with audiences:
allowing them to understand what you are trying to do, and being
transparent enough for them to comment both favourably and unfavourably.
In this way, theatres can genuinely share thinking, promote discussion
and look beyond the boundaries of the individual organisation.

What do people think?

(And, err, what do people think about what Andrew Lloyd Webber thinks?)

Comments are open here or on the original post.
Becoming a new member of National Theatre Wales Community (manual approval of genuine members)tag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2010-04-20:3152760:BlogPost:303112010-04-20T09:30:00.000ZCarl Morrishttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/CarlMorris
New members
Today we've made a very small change to the way new members are welcomed in. When you sign up to become a member there will be a short delay while your membership is approved manually.

You'll see a screen telling you this is happening, then after the short delay you'll receive an email to let you know you're approved. Usually this will happen within the same day.

At the moment we're having some problems with automated members creating spam blog posts
which advertise medicines and the like. These posts are not harmful as such, but more of a nuisance for the genuine members so we hope to screen them out.

We hope it will make the experience better on the
whole. Sorry for the delay.

National Theatre Wales Community remains very open to new members.
