One of the forgotten stars of the golden years of Hollywood is the actor Laird Cregar. Although he appeared in only sixteen films, he made such an impression in supporting roles that he was not easily forgotten. His most remembered roles were as Slade, Jack the Ripper, in a remake of "The Lodger", alongside Merle Oberon, and as George Henry Bone in " Hangover Square. " with Linda Darnell. The tragedy of Laird Cregar was that he was appalled by his weight, he weighed over three hundred pounds, and decided to go on a crash course diet, sheding over 100 pounds in weight, whilst making his final film. He wanted to be a leading man. This folly was to cost him his life less than two months after the final film was completed. He died of heart attack after undergoing an operation: he was thirty-one years of age. Cregar acted alongside such greats as Tyrone Power, George Sanders, Carol Landis, Don Ameche, Victor Mature, and Alan Ladd to name but a few.

The play now in development, mentioned on the title page, is a character study of Laird Cregar, with his contradictory nature, as he prepares for the opening night of the play that was to bring him to prominence in Hollywood: Oscar Wilde. The role had previously been played, to great acclaim on Broadway, by Robert Morley.

It happens that people may dislike some artists and reject trying to find positive traits in their character and behavior. Such an approach makes no good since people rely on their subjective assessment of the certain person without conducting an in-depth research. As every artist is not just a public person, but also a human being, he or she has both good and bad sides. As for me, I have realized that after a closer look at Chris Brown, the artist that I used to hate. Having analyzed his biography, one can claim that apart from his public scandals, he has many positive traits and his position also deserves a respect. Chris Brown is a talented man who has become very famous despite the fact he has issues with the reputation. In addition, he does as much as possible to change himself and become a better person.

There is no doubt that Chris Brown is a famous person even though he is a little bit less popular nowadays than he used to be at the beginning of his career. He was a real sensation in 2005, when his first album came out and brought him a commercial success (Botnar). Since that time he has released many albums. The last one is Heartbreak on a Full Moon released in 2017 (Anderson). The crowds love Chris Brown for his unique voice and his dancing skills. In addition, he is very attractive and therefore has many female fans. Furthermore, he collaborates with many famous people in the music industry including Fiddy, Zendaya, Usher, Tyga, DJ Khaled, and others (Finn). Such cooperation positively affects Brown’s career since he has a chance to enlarge his audience. In addition, Brown has featured in several films and even has his own fashion line (Botnar). All these have made him even more popular and evoked the interest towards his music in people who like cinema and fashion. Therefore, Chris Brown has made a commercial success at the beginning of his career, positioned himself as a good singer and dancer, and tried himself as an actor and a fashion designer.

The popularity of Chris Brown traces back to his skills. He is a talented singer and a great dancer. What is even more important - he has learned all this on his own (Botnar). It means that he has a real talent and does not need any teachers or specific trainings. In addition, it means that Chris has a strong will since he has reached a success on his own. It is a well-known fact, that his childhood has not been very happy and the fact that now he is a famous singer, but not a reserved person, says a lot about his character and self-realization. Therefore, Chris Brown has both great skills and a strong will.

Despite all his positive features, lately Chris Brown’s reputation has been dented and nowadays he seems to be a completely different man. He used to a young star with millions of fans, dating the famous singer Rihanna. However, in 2009 was arrested after attacking Rihanna and faced the problems of a possible imprisonment and a boycott by the artistic world (Beaumont-Thomas). Nevertheless, Chris Brown has declared himself as a person who is ready for positive changes. He has confessed that he wants to overcome this aggression and publically apologized to Rihanna. It seems that this story has influenced him a lot and he often keeps returning to it in his interviews, apologizing again and again for his behavior. He suffers from the mental disorders and tries to overcome it. His attempts are partially successful, as he still has problems with rage. However, nowadays Chris Brown is the father of a little girl Royalty and tries to do as much as possible to be a good dad (Botnar). Therefore, Chris Brown has a bad reputation, but he does as much as possible to deal with his mental disorders and become a better man, which means that he understands his guilt and is ready for a change.

Personally, I anticipate Chris Brown for his attitude towards Rihanna in 2009. After having a closer look the situation I have realized that this incident is a result of Brown’s mental disorder, but I still cannot respect a man, who beats and chokes his partner. It is hard for me to understand how a person can treat anyone like this, since it is the behavior of a beast, not of a human. His desire to change gladdens me but I do not believe that a man who has at least once done such a terrible thing can truly change. I understand and admit that it is quite sad that such a behavior may become an obstacle for enjoying great songs, films, or books.

In conclusion, Chris Brown is a famous man who has become popular due to his talents. He has started his career in 2005 and he still has many fans, releases albums, collaborates with other famous musicians, and declares himself as both an actor and a designers. A combination of his outstanding voice, great dancing skills and good-looking appearance has made him very popular. He is a talented man since he has learned everything on his own. In addition, he has a strong will and is a very perseverant person. That is true that Chris Brown’s reputation is mostly negative after the scandalous incident when he has beaten Rihanna. However, Brown declared himself as a man who tries to overcome his mental disorders and accepts his failures. Now he seems to be a loving father and a man who has changed a lot. However, I still dislike him because of the incident with Rihanna since I do not think that the one can be called a man after beating the weak and vulnerable woman. Nevertheless, Chris Brown’s talents and his desire to become a better person are the steps to rehabilitate his reputation.

Gypsy Makers Tour – 20th January to 29th June 2024

The Romani Cultural & Arts Company (RCAC) is pleased to announce the latest edition of their ground-breaking Gypsy Maker project. Gypsy Makers is a new touring exhibition that will feature work from artists that the RCAC has commissioned since the inception of the Gypsy Maker initiative in 2014. The Gypsy Makers touring exhibition will show new and existing artworks to mark the tenth anniversary of the GM programme which has been fully supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

Artworks from each of Gypsy Maker shows will be included in order to best represent the full range of voices and diverse practices that our programme has platformed to date. These existing artworks from the RCAC archive and art collection, will be displayed alongside newly commissioned artworks made specially for the 2024 exhibition. The exhibition tour will be accompanied by a programme of artist-led workshops that will expand upon themes within the show and further enlighten audiences regarding each artist’s practice.

Gypsy Makers will include works by the artists Daniel Baker, Billy Kerry, Artur Conka, Corrina Eastwood, Cas Holmes, Rosamaria Kostic Cisneros, Shamus McPhee and Dan Turner and is funded by the Arts Council of Wales.

The Gypsy Maker initiative supports the development of innovatively created artistic works by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller artists. The Gypsy Makers exhibition in 2024 expands the work of the RCAC by continuing to engage GRT communities with the wider public in an ongoing dialogue about the ways in which art continues to inform our lives today.

“We are so proud to continue our ground-breaking work with GRT artists, with support from the Arts Council of Wales. This project will strengthen the role of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers on the arts scene in Wales, the UK and beyond.” Isaac Blake; Director of the Romani Cultural & Arts Company

“The ground-breaking work of the RCAC in supporting Gypsy, Roma and Traveller artists is unparalleled. The Gypsy Maker project is unique worldwide in commissioning new bodies of work by GRT artists thus enabling the production of significant new knowledge from an underrepresented group and making a valuable contribution to international contemporary art and cultural discourse.” Dr Daniel Baker

There remains a regrettable shortage of knowledge about this exciting community. The further showcasing of its artistic heritage and current cultural innovation will benefit greatly both members of GRT communities and the wider population.

Another project that has been in progress, and nearing completion, is a monologue concerning the folklore of Wales and how it impacts on a folklorist's demeanour as he searches for answers to our existence and eventually it causes a complete mental collapse in which reality is not all it seems. The narrator, unnamed, tells of The Faery Folk in the extract below.

Carnival originally meant festival of the flesh. That a race of cannibalistic faery folk existed in the British Isles should not be questioned. My field-work during July of 18..., in the county of B……., was thorough. The villagers I spoke to, honest, Christian people, raised to work the land, with nothing to gain by speaking fabrications. The calumny I received from fellow members of the Folklore Society, during my lecture, is unjustified. Some are so set in their beliefs that to question orthodoxy is abhorrent. Without going into minute detail, I will furnish the facts: names have been withheld for obvious reasons. My conversation with the old gentleman, then in his late eighties, confounded me. His mind was so sharp that his recall of detail is astounding. The main actors in the story are long dead. I am able to confirm what the gentleman told me when I perused the written depositions that had been taken at the time; later kept under lock and key at the vicarage. The villagers speak so little of what had occurred during that traumatic period that they are wary of strangers, fearing ridicule if the events are misinterpreted. The vicar believed me when I told him I would be circumspect during my investigations. The old man’s sister, long deceased, had been the object of the strange faery folk who devoured the flesh of her lower right leg that had to be amputated by the apothecary when she had somehow struggled home. It seemed wild animals gnawed her ravaged leg. The cause of this heinous injury, according to the old man, is a curse that had been placed on their great-grandmother, and would enact by vengeance on a future generation, because she disabused one of the faery folk women who had asked for milk to quench her thirst. Anger of the villagers, roused aplenty, when they went to the area where the girl had been mistreated. Most were too afraid to walk across the grass that seemed to be trampled by thousands of marks that resembled imprints of birds’ feet. Minute specks of blood sprayed across stones; there were small pieces of what seemed to be masticated flesh that the blacksmith found. Another interesting aside to the testimonies of the villagers is their belief the faery folk were cursed to their diminutive appearance because they denied the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The girl told her mother she did not know how she came there, for she had been forbidden to go anywhere near the area of the three circles that the faery folk caroused in on Midsummers Day.
She described her attackers as imps: they wore white smocks and red caps. They pummelled her small body as she lay on the ground, unable to move. She could sense little as she cried; longing to be home. Her story, eventually spoken in hushed tones, never is forgotten. The girl grew accustomed to the false leg fashioned for her. She also had strange attacks of lethargy when she grew older and married. She would be asleep for days, then awaken and wonder what the commotion is about when her husband questioned her. She lived till her eighty-third year. Her daughters inherited an ability for languages and knew forbidden knowledge about the lore of the land. I have no comment to make on this as their descendants refused to speak with me.The drawings the apothecary made of her wounds were disturbing and leave little doubt that something occurred that day which had its origin in the distant past of the family when a slight brought such despair generations later. . .

We’re looking for people curious, interested and passionate about making change, to join our Sounding Board in Cardiff. The Sounding Board meets every two-months to discuss, inform, share and collaborate with us on creative productions, opportunities and projects.

We are seeking members with a diverse range of views, knowledge and backgrounds to help us make, shape and grow our work. You might be a community leader, a passionate mother or father, nan or grandad, you might be young or old, curious about the arts and theatre, or a social change warrior or looking for something new and different to do. We are interested in those who aren’t already connected to the arts, who believe in what could be possible.

What will it do for you and your community?
The Sounding Board acts as a catalyst – bringing people together, creating a network, creating opportunities in areas which have been neglected, developing leadership & artistic skills and offering entry points into the arts.

Why?
Common Wealth wants to create a movement that centres and supports working class communities to see themselves as artists, decision makers and leaders. We love collaborating and know that our work is better when we make it with people from the places we work in. We want to make work that means something. This starts with important conversations and ends with high-quality performances. We want our work to not just be relevant, we want it to be yours.

We have an exciting programme on offer, co-curated and built with our Sounding Board. Over the next couple of years we will be making a show about undercover policing and injustice with activists, researching a show about Welsh language, class and identity with council estates in Cardiff and Bethesda and delivering our free artist development programme ‘Everyone is an Artist’.

What to expect as a Sounding Board member:

• We meet for two hours (with cake!) 6 times a year for active sessions provoking conversation around our work, investigating how we can collaborate to develop ideas, continuing the mission of shifting agency and creating social change.
• You will be reimbursed £11 per hour (£22 per meeting) regardless of personal circumstances. Feel free to ask us more about how this works.
• Access to a ‘Go See Fund’ to go and see live performance.
• Paid opportunities to work on our shows
• Training in areas you’re interested in. This could be: community leadership, storytelling, creative workshop leading, sign-language. You get to decide as a group.

How to get involved:

If you’d like to be part of the Sounding Board we’d LOVE to hear from you.
Please email chantal@commonwealththeatre.co.uk with a paragraph or a short video filmed on your phone about you and what interests you about being a part of the Sounding Board
