New Play

I have written a play called Poppy Seed Travels Back in Time. It is set at Greenham Common, but it has a modern twist. It needs a cast of three women. Is there anyone out there who would like to hear more about it? All the best, Jan

"Outdoors" NTW11 is in The Telegraph!

Dominic Cavendish came to see OUTDOORS the week before last and this is what he thought:

Friday night in Aberystwyth – and it’s bucketing down. I’m standing, drenched, beneath an umbrella, on the promenade looking out to sea – a coalface of darkness. By rights, I should be utterly miserable. What’s more, sporting chunky headphones and required to squint at an iPod screen, I should feel ridiculous. Not a bit of it. I’m too enthralled to care.…

Flare! Reading Aloud for International Women's Day

Many thanks to all the women who turned up at National Museum Cardiff on Saturday to read aloud from their favourite writings by female authors!  Two groups were able to form, one in the foyer, which caused a great deal of interest from visitors to the museum, and one in the art galleries, which created an amazing visual and aural addition to the…

Job Opportunity at Bristol Old Vic

Yesterday at the Lucid event there was a lot of complaints about jobs not being well advertised. It's not for a writer but still, here's me doing my bit. I do expect a badge.

Back to work with a BANG !!

As i walked through the door of WHSmith's Cardigan i felt some dissapointment it finally hit home that i was back to reality and would have to go back to the humdrum routine of my life after having what can only be said as the best week of my life. Never in my life have i liked walking up a hill so much lol i complained but on the inside it wasn't so bad as i knew that i would have another fantastic day. I loved every waking moment i was able to spend up there, yes it got tiring and hard but…

Mine Research part II

We have spent 2 consecutive days with Pete, Rob, Gerald, Ian, Martin, Bob, Jake, John, Des, Russ, Mike and Bedrock and it has been glorious. I now know how to prepare the lamps and vaguely manage to work my way around the surface.

It has been quite immersive and I am starting to think more coalface than millions of years.

The repetition of the daily tasks, machinery checks and tour rhythm have somehow shifted my attention from the colossal dormant coal seam,…

After Big Pit

As part of my research into mining for The National Theatre of Wales, I thought I’d start by examining my relationship with coal.

My life with coal.

Born Herefordshire 1956 - red soil, red cows drooling over lush grass – coal came delivered by Burt, bent and black under his hundredweight sack. I thrilled to hear his knock and his lame clump through the scratchy crush of spilled slack. I was impressed by his strength, though if my dad was home from work,…
