Bedwas Bites Back: And they need your vote!

We've just had a message from Dennis at Bedwas Working Men's Hall, which was one of the key venues and inspirations for our March production A Good Night Out in the Valleys. They are on the shortlist for a funding opportunity from The People's Millions. Apparently full details are in the Daily Mirror, or you can just vote for them on 08716268115 Sorry not to have more info, but they are a fantastic group of people, and it's a beautiful old hall that has so much potential, so if you can…

Hitting a Stride

It's Friday morning and I'm on the train to Swansea. Shelf Life, aka NTW02, is in the middle of tech rehearsals and I'm planning a morning of sitting at the back of Swansea library being supportive. Last night the introduction to the show was being worked on - the WNO 'choir of librarians' outside the brick hulk of the library, sporting red umbrellas and singing in the rain. They are going to be wonderful. Peter Swaffer Reynolds' music weaves us into the world of the play with lyricism, humour… Continue

The Valleys Assembly: When does the future start? Local people in Blaengarw answer the question.

A group of us working on the Valleys Assembly went through the Garw Valley last week asking questions and gathering local people's answers. Here are their answers to our question: When

does the future start?

And as an extension of this first question, a new question arose: When did the past end?…

New Critics review A Good Night Out in the Valleys!

Our 4 New Critics attended the Press Night for A Good Night Out in the Valleys. They were asked to write a review of the show, send it to their mentor to read over and feed back on and then send to me to be published on the National Theatre Wales community. They have also been sent to Academi for posting on their website. Read on and see what 2 of our New Critics thought of the show. First is Dylan Moore, whose mentor is Lyn Gardner. Second is Megan Jones,… Continue

My last blog for 'A good night out in the Valleys'

Hey Blog, Sorry it's been so long since my last entry. Apart from being all consumed with putting the show on and touring, frankly I'm rather daunted by trying to do this blogging right. I have never been very good with technology!!!

We have reached the end of our journey with 'A good night out' and what a journey it has been. I sincerely hope that all of you who saw the production liked/loved it and were happy with what we achieved, I certainly am.

The job has been all…

Dylan Moore on A Good Night Out

The choice of first show for a brand new national theatre company is necessarily a political one. For a non-building based company like National Theatre Wales, the venue also assumes extra

significance. With an opening performance called A Good Night Out In The

Valleys touring miners’ institutes and workmens’ halls, Artistic Director John

E McGrath has very deliberately planted the National Theatre flag in…

pontardawe - home of satan

We have now done three of the eight shows and are in Pontardawe for number four. A woman just invited me back to her house to 'worship the dark lord'. I declined. John threw a wobbly this morning when I said that his aftershave smelled like a cheap tart's perfume. He's so sensitive. Alan the writer and John had a bitter set to over the reviews. Alan told John that it's his writing that makes the show and that a monkey could direct it. John called Alan a 'deluded slap head' and they had a brief… Continue

Phew, Hurrah, and Off We Go

It's Wednesday morning and I've staggered out of bed after a late night in Blaengarw Workmen's Hall. It's been an extraordinary few days: the tension and excitement of production week last week for A Good Night Out in the Valleys - the intense focus on the smallest points of rhythm in the staging - the tiny, unnoticed elements that could make all the difference; then the dress rehearsals (including one attended by two hundred pupils from Blackwood Comprehensive, a nerve-racking but ultimately… Continue

Day 6 - End of the First Week - Aberystwyth

It's Saturday and despite not getting to bed until 3:30 in the morning I still wake up before 9. The problem with being busy is that immediately on waking a thousand thoughts enter your head and as a consequence going back to sleep isn't really an option. The first week of the project is almost over and I feel pleased with the progress that I have made. Despite much aimless wandering on Monday and Tuesday I soon found direction and the interview with Mike Pearson on Thursday along with a… Continue
