Assembly

This is a little look at NTW Assembly. The footage is from the last two Assembly's, Brecon and Bridgend. If you haven't been to an Assembly before then you should make sure you go to one in the future. They are always full of suprises.… Continue

NTW06 Brecon Assembly

There was something decidedly odd about the build-up to National Theatre Wales’ Assembly. Rumours flew around town claiming that somebody had coated Theatr Bycheiniog’s stage with real turf. Posts on the NTW community website hinted that they’d be traditional Ghurkha dancing alongside hot-off-the-press scriptwriting and aerial performance, bringing Brecon’s artistic and cultural variety together.… Continue

War is a Tragedy and Sennybridge a Star!

This week I was fortunate to make my way up to the Brecon Beacons and see NTW's latest production ... The Persians (#NTW06). So what did I make of the experience?

Let me first provide some context. Did I know much about the story and it's history - a little bit, but not really. I knew it was a Greek tragedy and a Greek Tragedy is usually about love or war or both. Did I know it's significance as the… Continue

Day 137 - The Persians Day 4 - Chapter

During the previous three days I had settled into a pattern of documenting, and then things changed. What had worked for the first part of the week suddenly left me floundering around trying to find a way to record and make sense of the process I was witnessing. Retreat, regroup, change strategy.

i am documenting the genetic processes at work in the creation of The Persians, the forwards and backwards moves in the rehearsal process that lead up to the live…

Day 134 - The Persians Day 1 - Chapter Arts Centre

Chapter Arts Centre was full to overflowing with theatre types this morning. Not all had anything to do with NTW, but quite a few did. It was a little overwhelming when I first entered the rehearsal space and saw all of the faces. Mike Pearson led us through the plans for the production, a speech which he must now be very well rehearsed in, having had a number of months of interrogation directed at him on the subject.

I am here to document the process... I am armed…

O'REILLY'S PERSIANS blog two

“There is no exact correlation between languages. This process becomes even more difficult and contingent when you’re translating between times as well, there is no exact correlation between periods.” Colin Teevan.…

PERSIANS. O'Reilly. blog one

How do you make a new version of the first play in the Western theatrical canon, which also happens to be the World’s oldest recorded script, first produced in 472 BCE and written, in my opinion, by a genius?

The PERSIANS group page has lain silent for so long partly because of the efforts needed to broach the above, and my superstitious Irish soul not wanting to hex the process in what has been one of the most illuminating and exhilarating projects of my life.

PERSIANS… Continue

Day 4 - Mike Pearson Interview 1 - Aberystwyth

The first action of the project arrived today in the form of an interview with Mike Pearson about The Persians. We meet in his office and negotiate the space with a rather large video camera. Mike sits against the wall in the corner and I set the camera up with seeming confidence, thanks Dorian. The camera is definitely secure in it's mount… Continue
