Incredible the things they see

Where we are in the world. Pilsen.

A place rich with a cultural resistance, walls of art adorn the streets gathered through the years, created by people who stay and those who get pushed to leave. Gentrification.

I never realized the true implications and the seriousness of gentrification until I visited the US.  For Chicagoan it contributes to the sense of uncertainty that so many already have to live by.

Benjamin is explaining to the young people at ATPT about Pilsen…

Day one: The Wall of Respect

(The Cultural Centre, Downtown Chicago)

It's the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the wall of respect and we're here to see an exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Centre that documents the Black Power movement. The exhibition displays photos, letters, books and poems.

The wall on 43rd Street that of a derelict tavern was painted in 1967 with a mural 20ft by 60ft.

In 1966 the slogan "Black Power" energised the Black…

Where are all the working class artists?

Over the past 6 months I've been writing a report for the AHRC on what it means to be working class and work within the creative industries.

I've been up and down the Country interviewing people from young people, artists, activists, mps, creatives and educators. Asking them about their connection with art, who they thought art was for and finding out if anyone could become an artist regardless of social class. My mission to build a picture of how people are currently…

Where am I going?

Sometimes the first day is like banging your head against the wall - today was different.

Today we started by painting our bodies with invisible paint, banging Oday's chest with clenched fists, breathing in and opening our arms to the world and shaking away the shit.

We're getting to…

We’re a week and four days into rehearsals and yesterday was the first day we did a full run through of the play and I have to admit it went extremely well, the actors are brilliant, the trolley dancing blew my mind, I laughed  & cried.

Our first week has been incredible, beautiful, funny, insightful and…

Calais - The City of refugees

Glastonbury Festival aftermath - hundreds of tents, camping equipment, blankets and beer abandoned by festival goers to tired to carry what belongings they've brought back to there car to take home and use again. It feels mental trawling through the post apocalyptic chaos salvaging anything that might be useful. We find everything from cushions, blow up beds, clothes, food, beer, shoes, tents, sleeping bags,…

Nationalisation! Gurnos Day 3

Common Wealth is in the Gurnos developing a new show about Nationalisation.

We’re being supported by NTW to do an R&D and we’ve been really ambitious and decided to make it a bit of a proper show. The Gurnos deserves it. Over the past few months we’ve met and interviewed people of all ages about their thoughts on Nationalisation/Privatisation and Community Ownership. We’ve spoke about change, power, apathy and the future. On Friday night we’ll create an imaginary…
