Edinburgh Fringe FOUR YEARS ON

Hello,

I'm Charlie Hammond. I was a NTW TEAM member from some time around 2011-2013/4. But as Catrin Rogers, Press and PR Manager for NTW, reminded me when we met as this year's Edinburgh Fringe festival: 'Once a NTW member, always a NTW member'.

So here is a suitable self-indulgent but possibly interesting post about my journey from Cardiff 2013 to Edinburgh 2017, via the West Midlands, Paris, and Manchester.…

Rehearsals for Gaggle Babble's The Forsythe Sisters

Instead of allowing themselves to take a breather after the success of The Bloody Ballad of Mary Maid (Winner of the Brighton Fringe Emerging Talent, WhatsOnStage Musical Theatre Network Best Musical Winner and Best Music in a Musical), Gaggle Babble have launched straight into their next project Apparitions of Spirits with The Forsythe Sisters. Taking place in the rather lovely …

Collective Performance Night

Basically I've started thinking about ways to output work in Cardiff, and, having been in a couple of different cities recently and seen their "vibe", I've been thinking there is a gap in Cardiff for a collective performance night for theatre, comedy, music and whatever is going really. Scratch that Itch kind of achieves this, but is mainly Swansea based, and basically I just want to see a bit more interaction between all the arts discipline and a ground level. We all have dedicated nights…

Edinburgh Round-Up

As I write I am back at home in sunny Cardiff (well, in comparison) already feeling the post-Edinburgh festival blues. Firstly I'd like to give a big thank you to all those at NTW for allowing me to do this, I love Edinburgh and it has been a pleasure to write and promote for such an outstanding production. If I haven't already mentioned you should be watching NTW's The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning at…

Edinburgh - Getting there

My apologies, the last couple of days have been hectic, so here are my highlights.

From Where I'm Standing

From new-writing company :Delirium: From Where I'm Standing is a ambitious piece about inter-connectivity and the weight of the past, centred…

Edinburgh - Day 7

I am a bit wired and tired, so my apologies if my blogging is slowly degenerating into a sub-standard use of the English language.

Day 7 was now two days ago, so I though I'd get down my highlights first, and then fill in anything else later.

Fleurs de cimetiere/ Age Freckles and other tall stories…

Edinburgh - Highs and Lows

Seems that today has been a bit of an up and down down for both Laura and myself.

Trench by Les Infants Terribles

For an award-winning show, I genuinely don't understand what the fuss is about. Trench is all style and little substance.

The show takes the story…

Edinburgh - Recaps

Slightly behind on my writing up of reviews so I thought I would do some video's to catch up, before I go into overdrive with shows to see today.

So here's the video:

Just to clear up my mumblings, the actor playing Stuart Shorter is Fraser Ayres, and it is the character that has muscular dystrophy, not the actor.…

Edinburgh Day 3

My Welsh show of the day was Richard Burton Company's Tracy.

Written and created by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama BA Acting student Sophie Morgan-Price, Tracy follows a middle-management Tesco employee's…

Edinburgh - The Second Day

Well, pretty both myself and Laura were wiped out from yesterday, lord only knows how all the production team and performers in The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning must have been feeling.

So I think I'm right in saying that I have only seen two shows today, but I am off for a third later.

The first was Volcano's L.O.V.E. I have mixed feelings about the…

Edinburgh - Day 1

Bit of a short and sweet blog as I sit at two o'clock in the morning on my laptop in my ensuite student accommodation, which in Edinburgh terms makes me well-posh.

It's been a bit of a long day, but having been here for the last two years I have enjoyed showing off to Laura today my knowledge of where to go and what to do like the narcissistic maniac that I am. It feels nice this year having a real grasp of where everything is and I think that will help me concentrate on blogging and…

The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning Run-Through, at the NTW Warehouse.

Hi I’m Charlie Hammond and along with Laura Thomas I shall be up at the Edinburgh Fringe as representatives for ntwTEAM keeping everyone up to date with The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning, all the wonderful Welsh theatre, and everything else Fringe.

So, on Thursday I was lucky enough to get to see The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning in its entirety down in the NTW Warehouse. Since its tour in April 2012 everyone who I…

Young Critics Review - Children Of Mine, by Charlie Hammond

Jermin Productions Presents: Children of Mine

By Charlie Hammond

At RWCMD, Cardiff, Tuesday 23th July.

The tagline for Children of Mine – ‘You Can’t Bury Sorrow’ – brings with it an implication that the disaster at Aberfan has largely been forgotten in recent cultural memory, and that the story of the 116 children and 28 adults who were suffocated by the collapse of an unstable coaling pit onto Pantglas…

Young Critics Review of Sherman Swingers, by Charlie Hammond

What happens when you mix 20 writers, 10 directors and nearly 40 actors, giving them only 48 hours to create a series of short theatre pieces? This is the question…

Week 7 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

Hi, I’ve been running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM from Nov 6th, and have been attending a different Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock in order to get a bit of a refresh.

Thursday 22nd November – Week 7

After being thoroughly soaked in the rain, I was surprised by how well this session went. One or two people did drop out because of the filthy weather (we said they were probably winding their VHS tapes), but…

Week 6 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

I’m running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM every Tuesday, and have been attending a different Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock to brush up.

Friday 16th November – Week 6

So, a bit of a gap in the blogging as we had a weeks break from Improv at the beginning of November, and I had an incredibly busy week after that. But to quickly recap the fifth session we basically spent some more time…

Week 4 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

Hi, I’m running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM from Nov 6th, and have been attending a different Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock in order to get a bit of a refresh.

Week 4, Thursday 25th October

This week seems to be a lot quicker sum up, and I think it’s good that as the session go on we are able to spend more time on fewer exercises. We began by doing a scene from Chekhov’s The Bear, which threw us all a…

Week 3 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

I’m running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM from Nov 6th, and have been attending a different Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock, and telling you all about.

Week 3 – Thursday 18th October

So things started getting a bit more serious thins week, though maybe focused is the better word. We returned to analysing stories, and how we were telling them, and in a way there isn’t as much to tell about the sessions because we spent so much time making up… Continue

Week 2 Training with British Improvisation Theatre

Hey. So, if you’ve not already heard I’m running Improv as a part of NTW TEAM from Nov 6th, and have been attending a  Improvisation course in Bristol run by the lovely Tristan Hancock, and telling you all about it. As best I can.

Week 2 – Thursday 11th October

This week I’d overcome my cold, so was instead faced with battering winds and rain throughout my journey, but protected by my extremely fashionable Mac and waterproof trousers I came off…
