On March 10-13th there is a production of 'A Kind of Alaska' by Pinter being performed at Chapter Arts Centre in the Theatre by a new company - Be:spoken Theatre. Caroline Bunce , a sublime actress in the play, suggested in her wisdom that I, Julie, merely the director, you understand, create a blog..and that i was responsible for creating such a blog because i was the director... and therefore i havent got much else to do..so here I am.
Weve been rehearsing for about 4 days now and have given ourselves the luxury of having enough time to play and be as rigid or exploratory as we want to be. You dont often see the names Stanislavsky and Pinter in the same sentence, because the artistic journey required to realize text with their varying methods are just about as far apart as you can get... but i think if you dont tap into the resources of your actors through their instincts physically and emotionally about the roles , then how can you repress the emotions and preserve the ambiguity that Pinter requires? So ..thats where we are. Each role is separate in the text for so many reasons and im trying to create the sea in which these islands exist..anyone who knows me..know that that last sentence has exhausted me, i have peaked creatively, and now i need a glass of chardonnay..but one final thing...its a pleasure to reveal the play in this way with time and space and dare i say... the F word... funding!..and these actors...Caroline Bunce, Claire Cage and Nathan Sussex are making my job so rewarding....Steve Denton is our designer and has created many Pinter sets before. Lisa Harris is in rehearsals with us contributing her thoughts and observations and Andy Thomas is our stage manager.Rehearsals are at Chapter pretty much every day if you are around and fancy a chat. I will 'blog-more'soon
Feel free to comment on the' blogging journey' with us and hopefully we will see you at the show next month.
