Call for theatre makers, creatives and artists to help test National Theatre Wales' Respond programme

I am now in the first stages of testing out the RESPOND strand of National Theatre Wales' work and I need some help.

What is the Respond strand?
The respond programme enables us to create new work quickly in response to the urgent, important and interesting news and events that are happening right now. It is also a way that National Theatre Wales can work with a greater and more diverse range of theatre makers whilst providing a space for artistic development for creatives to experiment with making work in new ways, through different forms and with alternative theatrical languages.

What am I looking for?
I am looking for 5 theatre makers, creatives or artists who would like to help out in this testing stage to see how well it all works. I need participants to try out creative ideas and structures and to feed into the process of developing the Respond strand of work.

Theatre makers, creatives and artists must be available for all dates between 14-18 September 2009. Working hours are 10am-6pm Monday-Friday with a showing to invited guests at 7pm on Friday 18 September. This will all happen in National Theatre Wales' offices in Castle Arcade, Cardiff.

Theatre makers, creatives and artists will be paid the National Theatre Wales research daily rate.

How will this work?
You will be working together throughout the week to create a one-off evening of work in response to a set theme or piece of news. At the start of the week, you will be given a theatre menu, from which you can choose the elements which would make up the evening. These could include: a stand up comedy routine; a script slam; a game - for example. These elements will depend on your own skills, experiences, expertise and what you are interested in exploring,

You will then have the week to immerse yourself in the theme, researching and creatively exploring the news item or event, whilst developing an evening of brand new work as an immediate and direct response, involving and captivating the audience to engage them within the theme.

What is the theme?
"We Love the NHS"

-A 'movement' which has been encapsulated and whipped up by social networks, namely Twitter, after the continuing scandal between American Republicans badmouthing 'socialist medicine', with UK politicians coming out in mass support - apart from one Tory MEP who was reprimanded for saying he wouldn't wish the NHS on anyone - and has extra significance bearing in mind that coming up in South Wales there might be huge cutbacks in public medicine as the South Wales NHS faces a £60m shortfall and whilst remembering that Aneurin Bevan was Welsh!

How can you get involved?
Send me a direct message through this social network or email me at catherinepaskell@nationaltheatrewales.org

Let me know a little bit about yourself, the work you have made and why you are interested in taking part in this particular Response. Please include your contact details.

How will you be selected?
The deadline for submissions of interest is noon Tuesday 8th September.

I will then look through all the submissions to choose the 5 people who will be the best fit for the team on this particular Respond.

If you are not chosen for this Respond, please don't worry! There will be plenty more chances to be involved and take part, both in the testing and development phase and also in the future programme.

Looking forward to hearing from you x

Hi Catherine. I hope that the 1st day of the Respond Test has gone really well. I just had a thought - as part of your test week you may want to get your group to have a think about the project title, as RESPOND is also the name being used by the National Museum Wales for their music project. This may mean that you may get lost in online searches people might do for you, as you are both National and Wales!(Go to SEO – search engine optimization http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization)
Click on the link below to see what the museum are up to and to take advantage of the fantastic free music which they have made available. There are some really fantastic tunes up there, all inpsired by the collections. http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/music09/respond/

Unfortunately I will be away for the 1st Respond Program - but please let me know future developments of this - as it looks like a great initiative. Good luck!

Like others, I can't make these dates. Which is a big bloody shame because this is something I'm really keen on and would love to get involved. Please keep us informed!
