A theatrical staging of Christopher Logue's War Music
Directors Mike Pearson & Mike Brookes
Renowned theatre-makers Mike Pearson and Mike Brookes, celebrated for their recent,
large-scale interpretations of Aeschylus’ The Persians and Shakespeare and Brecht’s
Coriolan/us with National Theatre Wales, will bring their trademark vision to this multimedia
staging of Christopher Logue’s beautiful, filmic poem, derived from Homer’s account of the
last years of the Trojan War.
The audience will go on an epic journey with a cast of great Welsh actors, a troupe of
teenage gods, a stage shaped around them, and vast cinematic landscapes.
Iliad will be created entirely in Llanelli and the cast will consist of 6 actor/narrators: 2 female and 4
male, age late 30s to early 50s.
The production will contain four episodes, each performed twice over two weeks. All four episodes
will be presented consecutively in two durational performances; one throughout the day and one
overnight. An audio version of each episode will be streamed live.
Performers won’t need to memorise the text, it will be available to them throughout performances.
Rehearsal will involve not only developing vocal modes appropriate for delivering Logue’s text but
also a gestural and interactive physical style to accompany, animate, delineate, demonstrate and
illustrate the text.
This is not a straight acting job! It would probably be useful for performers to have experience in
radio, film, television and/or in theatre productions that have employed combinations of media
and/or have involved physical expression beyond naturalistic acting.
Strong, versatile voices are important and an ability to plot the delivery of demanding texts.
AS PER NTW CASTING POLICY, ALL ACTORS MUST BE EITHER WELSH, WALES BASED OR
PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED IN WALES.

ROLES:
FEMALE ROLES
We are looking to cast two actors, aged 30 - 50, any ethnicity, to be narrator/performers. Given the
multimedia nature of the production and Mike Pearson & Mike Brooke's creative process, we are
looking for skilful self-reliant performers who would embrace working as part of this extraordinary
production and who have a facility with classical text. Actors will need the stamina for long
performances, up to nearly eight hours of drama. This is not a job for the faint-hearted!
