CASTING BREAKDOWN
THE INSATIABLE INFLATABLE CANDYLION
National Theatre Wales
A theatre-gig from the creative minds behind the award-winning Praxis Makes Perfect for National Theatre Wales - musical genius Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon), writer Tim Price (The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning) and director Wils Wilson (The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart).
The production creates a new adventure for the title character from Gruff Rhys’ seminal solo album, Candylion, in a new event which is an exciting collision of theatre and gig, suitable for all ages. The event will include a substantial number of new songs by Gruff as well as favourites from the original album.
There will be an acting company and band made up of actors, musicians and actor-musicians, lead by Gruff.

CASTING BOTH MALE AND FEMALE ROLES:
We are looking for a company of playful and bold performers. We need good collaborators and inventive improvisers who like a challenge and are not afraid of leaping into the unknown. Personality is important. This is a piece of gig-theatre so it has the energy and raw vitality of a gig along with discipline and skill of theatre.
There will be direct interaction with the audience.
Everyone will play multiple parts.
The character of Candylion will take a few different forms (physicalizing the character, puppet, inflatable, masked - all these are possible), but it is safe to say that one actor will take the main responsibility of playing this part, although s/he will also take on other roles.
It will be important for everyone to be musical to some degree. We foresee that the company will include some performers who are highly-skilled musicians and some who are confident with group singing. There will be times when everyone will sing, mainly as a group, providing backing vocals, harmonies etc. The company will be mic-ed so we do not need big or musical-type voices. We are very interested in having a variety of instruments in the mix, particularly portable instruments.
It will be a very physical show – company members will need to be physically able and to move well and willingly.
AS PER NTW CASTING POLICY, ALL ACTORS MUST BE EITHER WELSH, WALES BASED OR TRAINED PROFESSIONALLY IN WALES.
