Critical Chinwag 'Tonight I'm Gonna be the New Me'

This is a strongly realised piece of physical theatre that goes to the heart of what it means to be in an intimate relationship with another human being.

The question raised is what is changed, what is lost, what must be tolerated, and how do we hold on to our sense of who we are, in the face of the other's perception of us, since we are all to some degree the product of the people with whom we share our lives.  The ultimate question, for both the woman and the man here, is, 'must I give up me to be loved by you?'

The woman, Jess, gives a performance that is loud, feisty, centre- stage, and demanding of her man, and of us, her audience.  Tim, the man, is by contrast quiet, fugitive, sullen. That they are both hurting emotionally from the fall-out from a relationship that has deteriorated into petty recriminations on both sides, is in no doubt. There are ugly, visceral imaginings on her part, punctuated by moments of great tenderness and gentle humour too.

Three dance sequences are pivotal to the narrative. In the first, Jess engages in a Bowie-esque, increasingly frantic, shuddering struggle to escape from everything that defines and confines her; this dance has the feel of someone desperate to slip their own skin, to become something brand new.

The second dance plays with notions of how the female seduces and pleases the male, but the final piece is the most daring and physically demanding,  it's spinning circularity suggestive of the impossibility of finding a path out of the complexities of this troubled relationship, that might lead the couple back to love.

To use a 'Jessism', we leave the theatre hoping that these two people can get all their ducks out of the road, and thus out of danger.
