DGW 2014 - Rita,Rollercoasters and Cottage Pie

This Sunday (12th) See's the second Dirty Gifted and Welsh at the wonderful Angel Hotel, Cardiff.

With a massive pool of talented writers and a partnership between NTW and the raucous Dirty Protest , what more could you want for a Sunday out of your PJ's? I've heard there's also going to be dancing!!

I am extremely excited and grateful that I was asked to write a short response play for the event.

So, Rita, Rollercoasters and Cottage Pie, not the title of the play but my inspiration

A good few days before the deadline for our response plays  to the heading 'Where do we go from here?' I set off on a journey to Stafford to go to the wonderful Alton Towers (Cue theme music).  On the journey up I scrawled random and incoherent ideas on the final pages left in my favourite note pad.

I found the heading quite a challenge and struggled to get a mash up of the songs with the same name (By Charles Bradley and That one from the Buffy Musical Episode) out of my head. Nothing I seemed to put on the page was exciting me and I was left wondering where did I go from here?

Alton Towers was amazing and a birthday treat well deserved , but I couldn't quite forget that I had a play to write.

The first ride we went on was Oblivion, a favourite from my teens. We queued up , as a got closer the front adrenaline set in. We strapped in and soon the brakes were realised on the vertical drop. In fits of giggles at the state of my hair I made my way over to another ride - a ride I'd been looking forward to.

Sadly that ride doesn't exist anymore

It was a shame and in it's place stood a faster and bigger Rollercoaster. I was a little disappointed and remembered continually queuing up to go round and round on it with my friends in my teens. But onwards and upwards.

That's when I met Rita - Queen of Speed

She's fast , furious and is an old clapped out race car that goes from 0-70miles per hour in 0.06 seconds.

It was so fast that I barely had time to think about the other ride , the play I had to write and make sure I posed for the ride camera. The breaks squealed and the ride was over. I staggered off the ride and then the idea came to me. I sat down and started to write a few notes on my play. As the day got on and I got spun upside down and shook side to side, the idea became clearer and after a brief conversation with my mum on the way home about cottage pie, I had all I needed!

The play I wrote is called Binge and you can catch it with many other plays , workshops , talks , surgeries and dancing at Dirty Gifted and Welsh This Sunday , 12th October from 11am- late - Ticket £7 on the door or £5 online.
