We believe that one of the best ways to develop is to spend time observing and supporting the work of more experienced individuals. And then getting stuck in.
So, in line with our year of surprises, I’m happy to announce that we will again be offering development opportunities for Directors and now, Producers too!
Emerging Directors:
This year we have got three fantastic opportunities spread across the year, for you to work with us as an emerging director. Each emerging director will receive a bursary of up to £2000 to enable them to take advantage of the opportunity. This is an all-in fee to cover any costs associated with being part of the project including travel and accommodation. Successful candidates will need to commit to full-time attendance during the rehearsals (generally this will be 4 weeks rehearsals plus the opening week). As well as rehearsals, and where time allows, there will also be the option to be involved in conversations around casting and early production meetings.
“Probably the best decision I’ve ever made. The invaluable support provided by NTW throughout allowed me to ask vital questions about the type of work I want to create and the kind of director I want to be, and most importantly, how to make it happen.” Rachael Boulton, Emerging Director, Tonypandemonium
As we go through our year of surprises, announcing each new show as we go, we’ll announce how to apply and the deadline for each position.
This is a brilliant opportunity for new directors to spend some time working side by side with a director on a NTW show. And yes, you can apply for each project - though you can only be successful once! The first opportunity this year will be attached to a project in June, to be announced soon.
Emerging Producers:
For the first time ever, we are announcing the opportunity of ‘Emerging Producer’. Unlike the position of emerging director, this will not be attached to NTW’s big productions but rather, to WalesLab. This will be an opportunity for up to two individuals, to support the work of up to three WalesLab artists each. The successful candidates will work alongside me to help produce the work of WalesLab artists and to help their work be seen by local audiences.
This will again be an all in fee of up to £2000 (depending on how many projects you will be producing). Successful candidates will need to commit to full-time hours during a period of intense development (usually between one and two weeks) and be available for some prep work in the lead up - we expect this will amount to approximately the same time as for the emerging directors - 5 weeks in total. Schedules for each project will be decided on by negotiation between all parties. Applicants should have some producing experience already behind them (either for other artists/companies or self produced work), have a passion for new work and work in development and a commitment to the development of the role of the producer in Wales.
To apply, send your CV together with a cover letter to emerge@nationaltheatrewales.org by 12noon on the 28 March 2014.
On it you should include:
I’d love to hear your thoughts about both of these opportunities and if you think we should be considering other development opportunities in the future.
