Thought-provoking, political and moving.

Fragments of Ash is a piece that is certainly not for the light hearted. A tale of a mother, surrounded by a loss that hundreds of women, men and families alike suffer everyday.
At a time when we as a country are losing soldiers every single day, the Notional Theatre have tackled a play that can be described as 100% anti war, and they deliver it with grace, respect and great, great pain.

Whilst aspects of the physical theatre piece did escape me due to personal preference, I easily followed it and was gripped. I cried, I felt, and hell I almost grieved with Mrs Spence as she told her story of loss. The acting was incredible by all members, even the hostage who barely spoke! the score (while not my taste) perfectly served its purpose as an accompaniment to an epic story demonstrating a harsh reality and a cruel world.

I do however think the ending lacked the finality of an excellent show, although with a war we endure that also lacks an end, perhaps the end served an accurate purpose.

How does a mothers become a suicide bomber? - I suggest you go to Chapter Arts Centre and find out.
