Life in a Small-Scale Theatre Company...

We held auditions yesterday for our DT100 project, Return Journey.

All of our applicants contacted us as a result of a call that we placed on the National Theatre Wales website and I can safely say that there are a very talented bunch of actors on this site. Auditioning is the hardest thing that we have to do. We understand people's commitment and the sacrifice that they make in coming to see us and we appreciate all of that. Thank you everyone who came, it was great to meet you and if only we could give you all jobs!

For all of that, it is the most important thing we can do as a touring theatre company; it is important to work with new people, bring in new ideas and keep things fresh; it gives our audiences a new treat and keeps us on our toes too.

Return Journey is a masterpiece which is every bit as good as Under Milk Wood, if far less well-known. Our challenge is to take those words from off the page and on to the streets of Swansea that inspired them; the success of a project is always down to the quality of the team - we have no worries there, I think.

We have also been working on the start of our next project, the immensely exciting Aberystwyth Mon Amour. The author, Malcolm Pryce, is adapting the novel for the stage and we have the services of the fantastic Abigail Anderson as director. We have got a great designer and a great sound designer; the co-producing services of the Swansea Grand Theatre and all of the facilities that they can offer. With source material like that and the support of this lot, we can't wait...
