I’m obviously far too old to have contributed a screenplay to a youth-oriented short film scheme like the BBC Made In Wales series. But Roger Burnell’s It’s My Shout organisation put out an open call for scripts and mine, “Say It”, was selected. Or, more accurately, plucked from the sub’s bench after another project was deemed, for whatever reason, to be unsuitable.

Cut to a few months later, and I’m in the St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay, at the party following the premiere screenings of all eight films (six in English, two in Welsh) at the Wales Millennium Centre, dazed, and within hassling distance of such luminaries as guest of honour Rob Brydon and the Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones. The mood is celebratory, and my overwhelming feeling is one of relief: the films produced in previous years have been variable in quality, but the 2013 crop are all slickly executed.

I was even rather pleased with mine, the credit largely going to director Andrew Pring, and unreasonably pulchritudinous lead actors Emily Burnett and Ross Langford. Not to mention the crew; a mixture of trainees and professionals. There’s also a guest appearance from Cardiff City legend Nathan Blake. On premiere night, it even won an award – but since it was for best trainee location manager (Eleanor Shaw), I suppose it would be impolite to try and claim any credit.

The process wasn’t entirely painless – we went to nine or ten drafts of the screenplay; but having unsuccessfully submitted several scripts over the years, I was delighted to finally be involved. The viewer may, of course, beg to differ – you can judge for yourselves when (barring some unforeseen circumstance) “Say It” kicks off the series late on Tuesday November 5th on BBC2 Wales (and thereafter on the BBC iPlayer). You can even try and guess which classic British film I took inspiration from.

And I’ll just sit back and wait for the offers of work to come rolling in…
