We presented our ideas to a nice little audience yesterday. I was stationed behind the lighting desk and sound kit so I didn't see much of the journey, but it seemed to work pretty well.

Its the first time I've designed a soundscape that has involved a choir. I wanted to give the sound a spatial quality, using different techniques throughout the piece, but with the consistent theme of mining. I used a lot of stereo separation for the textural soundscapes, and, at one point, had the choir distributed around the stage as the audience wandered through the forest of their bodies and whispered poetry. I think that was nice.

I made a few tracks from samples of Big Pit and the choir singing Three Miles Down, then lost confidence in them and tried the tech run with lots of silence, but reintroduced some sound behind the miners' stories - I think it helped us to claim the space.

Its been an honour and a pleasure working closely with everybody; Mathilde, Chris and James, the boys from Big Pit, Carys and the choir and Martin and his crew at WMC. I look forward to seeing where this project can go...

The next task is getting Gil Scott Heron out of my head.
