National Theatre Wales and Oily Cart present a professional development one-day course

National Theatre Wales and Oily Cart present a professional development one-day course:

OILY CART’S THEATRE FOR PEOPLE WITH COMPLEX

LEARNING DISABILITIES

A practical, hands-on, introduction to the aims and the methods of this internationally acclaimed company by the artistic director, Tim Webb.

23rd July 2018. 10am – 3pm, Cardiff

The day will consist of practical skills sharing focused around the rehearsal room.

Workshop is limited to 20 participants. Cost: £30

Throughout the day we’ll be looking at the multi-sensory quality of the company’s work: why the company can’t rely on seeing and hearing, the senses dominant in so much theatre, and how the company have developed tools and approaches to working in this way.

During the workshop, the group will practically explore various relaxing and amusing theatre games as well as looking at some video examples to understand how Oily Cart goes about creating its productions for young people defined as having Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities or an Autistic Spectrum Condition.

We’ll be exploring the interactive style of performance which is central to the work the company does with young people with complex disabilities, making them, their families and their teachers key contributors to any performance.

We’ll also see how Oily Cart has challenged the notions of location and duration in performance. There will also be the opportunity to look at Oily Cart’s equipment and we’ll look at how Oily Cart’s methods might be used in theatre for other, often excluded, audiences.

Tim Webb is one of the founders and the artistic director of London-based Oily Cart that has been creating theatre for audiences with complex disabilities since 1988. He has acted as mentor for this kind of performance to Replay in Belfast, Chicago Children’s Theater and Lincoln Center in New York.

This course is suitable for artists wishing to develop their practice in this area, Teachers and NHS practitioners.
