New Graduate Showcase 2010: Call for Applications

The Project

This annual regeneration scheme, launched in 2002, encourages graduates to build and strengthen their connections with Wales on completion of their formal dance training. It offers a unique opportunity for dancers who have graduated within the last two years and who have an existing association with Wales to develop a relationship with WID and other Wales based companies and individual artists.

The project enables up to five newly graduated dancers and five dancers from past projects to work with two choreographers over an intensive two-week period and an opportunity to experience different approaches to dance making and performance. The project is held between 11 and 24 July in Cardiff and culminates in site-specific performances over two days at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff and will be presented within their Blysh Festival.

Selected graduates are awarded a weekly allowance of £200 for the two weeks totalling £400 and up to £50 towards accommodation and travel expenses.

The Choreographers

Two choreographers will work with the ten dancers to create short (approximately ten-minute) pieces which will be performed as part of a double bill in the world class venue, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. Each year WID invites established Welsh/Wales based or associated choreographers to create new work for the project. To date choreographers have include Sean Feldman, Deborah Light, Pebs Jones, Jo Shapland, Jem Treays, Marega Palser, Chris Tudor, Sean Tuan John, Sandra Harnisch-Lacey and Tanja Råman. This year we are delighted to be working with internationally renowned artists Nigel Charnock and Joanne Fong who will work with the graduates and past project dancers to create a varied programme of dance theatre which will reflect a vaudeville theme.

Application

Eligible candidates will be offered an audition held in Cardiff on Sunday 13th June between 1.30pm to 5.30pm. The audition will consist of a technique class and creative workshop led by the project choreographers Nigel Charnock and Joanne Fong.

If you wish to be considered for the New Graduate Showcase please email carole@welshindance.co.uk for an application form which must also accompany a reference from a tutor, choreographer or director and return it to WID by 28 May, 2010.
