Opportunity for young women to take part Shared Experience's Mermaid at Sherman Theatre

This April, Shared Experience are bringing their world premiere of Mermaid to the stage at the Sherman Theatre, inspired by the story by Hans Christian Andersen.

The company is offering young people in the area the chance to perform in this bold new production. Shared Experience are looking for girls aged between 14 and 20 to form the Mermaid chorus and work alongside the professional cast when the production comes to the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff from 21 – 25 April.

More about Shared Experience's Mermaid...

Shared Experience's Mermaid is a powerful coming of age story about love, loss and longing. Plundering the haunting tale for its dark, erotic, mythic power, writer and director Polly Teale transports the story to a contemporary setting in this spellbinding, new production which is touring the UK from March 2015. It is designed by Tom Piper, who recently designed the poppy installation, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London. The cast includes Natalie Gavin, Polly Frame, Steve North with further names to be announced.

The Chorus

During the creative development of Polly Teale's scripted adaptation, Shared Experience explored the idea of using an on-stage chorus of young people and discovered that their presence heightened the central themes of the play which explores self-image, identity and the pressure on young people today from the media and internet.

From this, Shared Experience has created a pioneering, participation project around Mermaid which is open nationally to young women aged 14-20. In each of the cities the tour is visiting, the company will recruit a chorus of young women who will be part of the production, performing on stage, and creating the sound of the mermaid’s singing.

Participants will have the chance to engage with Shared Experience’s unique process and enhance their performance and vocal skills. Participants will also take part in a national project exploring themes around identity and body image that are central to the production.

If selected to take part young people will become a member of the Mermaid team taking part in the technical rehearsal and performing in the show alongside the professional cast. Participants do not have experienced quality singers, just enthusiastic and willing to participate, with a passion for drama.

How to apply

Participants must be able to attend sessions on 29 March and be available from 21 – 25 April at the Sherman Theatre.
