Romeo & Juliet like you’ve never seen or heard before
Adamsdown Arts Association presents… ROMEO & JULIET MASH UP

Sherman Cymru and Adamsdown Arts Association will be working with groups in and around the STAR Communities First cluster over the next few weeks to create a ‘Romeo & Juliet Mash Up’ version of Shakespeare’s play, ahead of Sherman Cymru’s production performed at Sherman Theatre in October.

With the support of Sherman Cymru’s Sherman 5 project and Adamsdown Arts Association, over the next few weeks members of the public interested in drama, theatre, song writing and music, as well as film, will create a mash up performance based on the themes of Romeo & Juliet.

Adamsdown Arts Association (A3) is a voluntary arts group which has provided participatory arts activities to local residents for over ten years. A3 has been awarded funding for this project which will support its relationship with Oasis Cardiff and third sector groups that work with young people Not in Education, Employment or Training, in a partnership with professional theatre company Sherman Cymru. Cardiff Council, through its ‘Cultural Projects’ funding, has awarded A3 £4500 towards the 'Romeo & Juliet Mash-Up' as way of nurturing skills in the local community by addressing some of the themes from the play still relevant in today’s society: feuds, family and communities.

Sherman Cymru is committed to engaging with local communities. The new Sherman 5 project is a 5 year scheme funded Paul Hamlyn Foundation which allows Sherman Cymru to engage with audiences from disadvantaged communities and develop their interest in their arts locally.

Paul Hamlyn Co-ordinator for Sherman Cymru, Guy O’Donnell said: “We are thrilled to be working with such a great organisation and we value the support and work they do in the community. We felt that the themes of Romeo & Juliet were so relevant in today’s society that we were keen to work with the local young community and hear their own interpretations of the piece through music, art and dance as they become own modern day Shakespeare’s.”

The last week of August will see the groups spending the week at the Sherman Theatre for a unique opportunity to mash up Romeo & Juliet, where they will be involved in graffiti workshops to help create a set; mask-making workshops; and costume design. The group will also work with filmmaker, Paul Whitaker, towards making their own version of a film trailer, and Community Music Wales who will be running music workshops and creating a new track with the group.

Adamsdown Arts Association and the groups will be working to produce a final Romeo & Juliet Mash Up performance, which will be performed at Sherman Theatre on Saturday 30 August.

The group will continue to work on their piece throughout September and October before returning to the Sherman with a special opportunity to perform their mash up version on stage, just before the final performance of the Sherman Cymru Romeo & Juliet on Saturday 18 October. The mash up will be performed in front of Sherman Cymru’s Artistic Director of Romeo & Juliet.
