THE RADICALISATION OF BRADLEY MANNING WINS INAUGURAL JAMES TAIT BLACK PRIZE FOR DRAMA

Tim Price’s The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning has won the James Tait Black Prize for Drama 2013. The announcement was made at an awards ceremony on Monday evening (5th August).

The James Tait Black Prize is the UK's oldest literary award, but this is its first ever award for Drama, worth £10,000. The shortlist of five productions – including Kaite O’Reilly’s In Water I’m Weightless, another National Theatre Wales production – was chosen from more than 180 plays.

The £10,000 drama prize drama prize was launched last year by the University of Edinburgh in partnership with The National Theatre of Scotland and in association with the Traverse Theatre.

The announcement of the inaugural prize winner was made at an award ceremony this evening (5th August) in Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre. The National Theatre of Scotland also produced a reading of the play at the event.

Tim Price accepted the prize at the ceremony with his family. He said: “I am thrilled to be recognised by such a prestigious award, and honoured to be chosen as winner from such a fantastic shortlist of plays – that it is the first time a category for drama has been added to the James Tait Black Prizes is even more exciting.”

John McGrath said: "I'm delighted that Tim has won this award, and for such a wonderful script. His thorough research, political savvy and above all his compassion are evident when you read this play, and typical of the kind of bold writing for which Tim is becoming known. The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning is a play that shows the vibrant, rule-breaking health of theatre writing in Wales today. It's also been a pleasure for me to direct, and I'm very glad the judges admired it as much as I did."
