WalesLab Artists, Emerging Producers and the NEXT WALESLAB DEADLINE

Hi Everyone

It’s been a little while since my last blog post featuring the next cohort of WalesLab artists (its been a busy Summer). But here it is… along with information and links to the pages of our first ever Emerging Producers, supporting the artists to carryout their research and development and starting to think about how these project may move forward in the future.

Projects kicking off Sep 14

Kyle Legall– Rats Rose Against the System

Kyle will be working with Mathlde Lopez and a mix of professional and community performers to do further research into his idea for a performance – Rats Rose Against the System (R.A.T.S). Kyle has written a script (heavily influenced by his interest in comic books and animation) and recorded it against a sound track where the ‘rats’ of Tiger Bay plot to strike against the system. His WalesLab project will support him to find ways of performing this script to a live audience, finding a physical language for the characters whilst continuing to use and exploit pre-recorded sound.

This project was supported by Toks Dada working as Emerging Producer.

Frank Thomas and Brent Morgan – You’ll Be a Man

Frank and Brent will be spending one week carrying out research and development of their idea, ‘You’ll Be a Man’. By combining spoken-word and theatre they plan to ask questions of society’s perceptions of young men and male identity.

Project Based Productions – The Street

Artists (Ellora Adam, Angelo Constantinou, Lewis Ryland, Dave Evans and Olivia Shouler) plan to spend one week creating a living portrait of Clifton Street in Splott, Cardiff by weaving together character studies of the street's most infamous and intriguing residents and architecture.

Bethan Marlow, Laura Karadog - Llaneski

Bethan and Laura plan to spend time meeting the ever-growing multi-cultural community of Llanelli by inviting community members to take part in creative workshops. Together they plan to discover and uncover stories from this vibrant and growing community that currently are not being heard. Bethan is a writer with experience of writing verbatim works.

Laila Mason and Anthony Correa with Louise Osborn - Our Mothers Were Sisters

This project will further develop work that was initiated through WalesLab last year (have a look at Louise's Blog post here). The artists have discussed the use of food, smell and objects as a way to help evoke memory and strengthen the storytelling from their last project. They plan to develop a piece of interactive theatre that will carry beyond Tiger Bay: this work is about human nature in all it's shades.

This project will be supported by Sandra Bendelow working as Emerging Producer.

Matt Ball - Light is Like Water

Matt will be spending time working with a lighting designer and small cast to experiment with ways of adapting ‘Light is Like Water’, a short story written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in which two boys flood their parent’s apartment with disastrous effects for them and their school friends.

This project will be supported by Nia Skyrme working as Emerging Producer.

(Announcements about where and when you can see the results of these investigations will be posted on the NTW Community nearer the time)

Feel free to contact me, the artists or the emerging producers for more information about any of these projects.
