Help find a new home for the Memory Store

The Memory Store is a cabinet of curiosities built to accompany our touring theatre production Lost In The Neuron Forest. The show explored what it meant to have dementia and how identity survives as memories fade away, so as a way of preserving and encouraging the sharing of memories we created the Memory Store through a series of community- based creative reminiscence workshops. We worked with people from Newport, Bangor and London to help them unlock their memories and distill them into an artefact to keep in the store, and as the Store toured to different venues, people from all over Wales & England interacted with the installation and added their own memories. Among the contributions are audio recordings, drawings, poetry, sensory memories (coffee grounds and gorse flowers amongst others), and illustrated stories, all displayed in non-breakable jars and boxes. The artefacts are designed to be opened up and explored, and it is hoped that they prompt the explorer to recall their own memories. You can see a film about the Memory Store and some of the memories it contains here: https://vimeo.com/111658977

We sadly have no room to keep the installation now the tour is finished, and we would like to find it a new home where it can continue to grow and provide stimulation and pleasure to visitors. We think it could work well in a care home, a supported living environment, or an educational setting. It has previously been displayed at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery; Toynbee Wellbeing Centre, Bangor Museum & Art Gallery, and a number of theatre venues. It is currently in London.

The cabinet itself is in 2 parts- the top section measures 1m x 1m when closed for transport or storage, and 1m high by 2m wide when the doors are opened for display and interaction purposes. Inside are the memory jars and a cassette player to play back the audio memories. The lower section is a cupboard for storing spare jars and workshop materials, and measures 1m x 1m. There are braces attached to the back of the unit for stability- these require a depth of 1m, or if you wanted to, the cabinet could be permanently fixed to a wall instead. We have signage and instructions for use in English and Welsh, and would be happy to assist with installation and an accompanying interactive workshop session.

We very much hope to find a new home for The Memory Store so that the many stories it contains can continue to be preserved. If you’re interested in finding out more, please get in touch with us by email: hello@breadandgoose.co.uk
