Meet 1800hrs - JACK FURNESS

Jack Furness - 1800hrs

Director and Herald Angel Award winner Jack Furness studied music at Cambridge University, graduating with double first-class honours. Jack is the founder and artistic director of Shadwell Opera, which seeks to engage and provoke new audiences for opera with politically and socially engaged work that speaks to a contemporary sensibility.

Recent work includes Speech Acts, an election time double-bill exploring issues of the relentless pursuit of capital gain and the implications of 'othering’ anti-immigration rhetoric; Amadis de Gaule, an eighteenth century opera by JC Bach, which Jack gave a post-cataclysmic, anti-naturalistic, zombie-inspired makeover which involved Brechtian and Noh theatre appropriations, 5 tonnes of mud, and a kalashnikov; In the Penal Colony, by Philip Glass after Kafka, an exploration of our complicity in torture and execution and the violence of theatrical representation; and two short opera films for Channel 4’s Random Acts.

Jack is interested in making things which counter disenchantment, or create an aura in an age of digital reproduction. Jack will be exploring this at 1800hrs by continuing timeframes with Jac Ifan Moore, a project started at NTW Summercamp, a projected window which re-invigorates our perceptions by playing with our sense of space and time.
