Fio are seeking two black actors for an upcoming production of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop.

We're looking for a female aged 20-35 to play Camae, and a male actor aged 35-45 to play Martin Luther King Jr.

The production is supported by the Arts Council of Wales, and will take place at The Other Room Theatre in October.  This is the first time this significant work will be produced in Wales.

A little about the play:

A two-hander, it is the fictional depiction of the Reverend Martin Luther King's last night on earth before his assassination on April 4, 1968.  Set in a motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, an exhausted King returns from a prophetic speech during the sanitation workers’ strike and is visited by a mysterious maid, Camae, with a much greater mission than delivering his coffee. It won the Olivier for Best New Play in 2010.

We intend to start rehearsals in Cardiff on September 12th with the production dates being October 4th-15th (there may also be a couple of days the w/c 5th Sept, TBC).  Fio's artistic director, Abdul Shayek, will be directing.

It is our belief that Hall’s writing can facilitate a much needed conversation about race and equality that reflects the social situation both here in Wales and globally.  We seek actors who are attracted by the prominence of the role and the significance of the piece.

As part of the company's ethos, we are only interested in seeing Welsh and Wales-based black actors.  The roles are paid.  Finally, we plan to hold a small number of open rehearsals in community centres, so actors must be comfortable with this.

Anybody interested in submitting themselves for this production should email a CV and introduction to casting@wearefio.co.uk by 10AM MONDAY 22ND AUGUST.  Auditions will be held on Friday 26th August.

If you have any questions, please e-mail the address above.
