Welsh National Opera – Older Actress needed for Der Rosenkavalier

General Notes for all Candidates

Welsh National Opera is looking for an actress to play the part of the Old Marshchallin in their new production of Der Rosenkavalier.  The director is Olivia Fuchs and conductor is WNO’s Music Director Tomáš Hanus.

Rehearsals start on 24 April 2017 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, and continue until the opening performance.  Performances are as follows:

Sunday 4 June 2017, 4pm – Performance 1 – Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
Saturday 10 June 2017, 6pm – Performance 2 - Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
Saturday 17June 2017, 6pm – Performance 3 - Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

Saturday 1 July 2017 – Performance 4 – Birmingham Hippodrome

The actress will need to be comfortable with speaking on musical clues, so musical understanding is essential.

Character Details

Old Marschallin –Needs to have fragility of really old age (80s/90s, although obviously can be played by a younger person), charisma and elegance – believable as someone who is aristocratic and has had privilege even if she has now fallen on harder times.  Grey or white hair.  Would particularly suit an ex-dancer.  Height should be around 5'2".

Application is by CV (which must include a photograph) in the first instance, with a shortlist of candidates invited to audition on Thursday 16th March at the Wales Millennium Centre.  We cannot reimburse travel expenses.
