Role:

KATIE (30s)

Katie is from the west side of Newport. She used to be fierce and fiery but she’s burnt out. She used to be fearless, riding bikes very fast down steep hills, running, racing, adventuring and always exploring. Now, her wiring has gone on the blink. She is grown up and a mum, full of fret, fear and worry. She has lost her brave. Then one day, she decides to live like she did when she was small and learns how to be brave again.

We’re looking for a female performer (any ethnicity) who can convincingly play a woman from and living in Newport, South Wales. We’re looking for someone who has strong comic skills, who has a bit of a fierce edge but is also able to show vulnerability. The character is in their 30s. The play is very much rooted in contemporary Newport so we’re looking for someone who can nail an authentic Newport accent. The performance will be in the round, with little-to-no set but with some props, and so we’re looking for someone who is able to command a space.

Dirty Protest actively encourages applications from disabled, D/deaf and sensory impaired performers.

Agreement:

£471 per week fee

In addition, Dirty Protest will provide travel and accommodation where applicable on tour.

About HOW TO BE BRAVE

Producer: Dirty Protest

Writer: Sian Owen

Director: Catherine Paskell

HOW TO BE BRAVE has been developed from our collaboration with Paines Plough, from our LATER performance of MANY HAPPY RETURNS at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017. The production follows Dirty Protest’s previous successes, including SUGAR BABY by Alan Harris (Roundabout, Edinburgh Fringe 2018, 2017 and international touring), LAST CHRISTMAS by Matthew Bulgo (Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and national performances) and award-winning PARALLEL LINES by Katherine Chandler (Wales tour).

This play is Katie’s journey as she begins to create an instruction manual for her daughter on How To Be Brave. Determined to listen to unheard voices and the city of Newport itself, she goes exploring to find what she’s really made of. The iron in our blood is made from exploded stars from the Big Bang, so she decides to harness the power of the supernovas in her body and seek the answers that she can pass on to her toddler daughter so she never loses the powerful, fierce determined magic she arrived into the world with.

A one-woman drama and love story to the city that made her, How To Be Brave is a new play from writer Sian Owen (Pentabus, Oxford Playhouse, BBC Radio 4) and award-winning Welsh company Dirty Protest.
