WATERFRONT WASTELAND MEDEA MATERIAL LANDSCAPE WITH ARGONAUTS

by

Heiner Müller

Co-production The Other Room Theatre with BÉZNĂ Theatre

Storyline:

The play is structured into three parts:  In a post-war environmental cesspit everyday actions play against the backdrop of industrial pollution, consumerist waste and human remains; immigrant Medea avenges herself against her unfaithful husband by murdering his new bride and her own children; a soldier reflects on his loss of self before he is killed on the battlefield.

About production:

A masterpiece of German post-modern theatre which explores the consequences of globalisation and colonisation through the myth of Medea. The triptych of short plays deals with issues which have remained unchanged since the play was written in 1982: colonisation, unfettered capitalism and unequal warfare.

The prime socio-political issue we will focus on is the destructive inequality inflicted upon ordinary citizens in the undemocratic expansion of western power. We will explore the negative effects of global capitalism on developing countries by looking at its repercussions on the individual. The background is western military domination, the subject is Medea. Western domination afflicts developing countries and when the underdog reacts with violence, he is put down. This was true of all the immigrants to the UK and it is now true of the Islamic State. Medea is that underdog, the betrayed and exiled immigrant whose only option of self-assertion is violence against the coloniser. Our intention is to expose to our audiences the fact that the demonisation of the immigrant is a political act.

Sînziana Koenig’s production aims to expose the paradox of imported capitalist democracies into developing countries causing the loss of individuality, mass immigration and the narrowing of gender roles. This co-production between BÉZNĂ Theatre and The Other Room will have a mixed Romanian-Welsh cast and crew. The production will be an ensemble piece. In our bold re-imagining of the play, we will re-distribute the text amongst the characters, and all cast members will have equal collaborative input and ownership of the production.
