Understanding audience

We need your help...National Theatre Wales, No Fit State and Joylab are working on a research project to help develop better dialogue with their audiences, with an emphasis on digital and fun. But just who goes to these shows? This forum is to explore the audience.

Please select a research question below and add your thoughts.

All the best,

Is the relationship with audiences changing due to digital tools available? 4 Replies

Both to the show-makers and the audience themselves? Is it really the same as it has always been or do you see digital as changing the relationship? Continue

Do you want dialogue with your audience outside of the "show" format? If yes, what and why?

With a focus on digital [web, social media etc] everything from feedback on a show, rating a show, show/project development, your own research, building a fanbase etc. But from your perspective…Continue

Hi all,

We're running a prize-draw survey - win free tickets to both NoFit State Circus and National Theatre of Wales shows. Runner-up prizes too :)

Just need to complete a quick survey to join draw http://fluidsurveys.com/s/NTW_NFS_AudienceInsight/

If you've got 2 minutes, be great if you could participate. Survey closer tomorrow midday.

Many thanks

Thanks for the link to that article Laura.  I agreed with sentiments overall.  I wasn't sure that I could talk about audiences as 'super-fans' with a straight face though!!

For me building an arts organisation is about building a community - some people may be very involved, some only occasionally so.  But all are interacting with the company and with each other - none are just customers buying a product - that's not what art is for or about.  The challenge to organisations is to create flexible interactive ways of communicating with people that reflects the quality of our community'e engagement with us.

many thanks for sharing Laura. This is exactly the kind of feedback it would interesting to hear - to get that wider view of just what is "audience".

Quick hello to everyone who's joined!

If you guys have a few minutes, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on our research question:

Do you want dialogue with your audience outside of the "show" format? If yes, what and why?

We're interested in understanding what kind and type of dialogue show-makers [producers, directors, actors, etc] want with audiences. From email to via Facebook pages, on forum's like this, to meeting in person at a venue.

This leads to the more pertinent question, or why? Why would you want dialogue with an audience member outside of the "show"? What would you like to ask them?

And what if they could to talk to you, ask you questions etc. This could be seen to be intrusive to some. However social media is showing the arts are a very fertile sector for communication the other way - with audiences engaging and using social media to contact/follow and engage the arts directly outside of the show format:

Venue - Barbican: https://twitter.com/BarbicanCentre - 171k followers

Production - https://twitter.com/bookofmormonldn - 13k followers

Theatre - https://www.facebook.com/nofitstatecircus - 8.5k fans

Actor [of hollywood action film franchises] - https://www.facebook.com/VinDiesel60m fans

Love to hear your thoughts all.

Fergus
