Profile Information

What I do:
I’m Artistic Director of Theatr Cynefin and The Republic of the Imagination and a trainer and consultant in applied theatre
A little more about me:
Theatr Cynefin (www.cynefin.org) is a Wales based platform for community activism through theatre. The activism takes on political, social, psychological or spiritual form, according to circumstance, and is always in the direction of greater awareness and freedom.

I’m also director of research and practice at ‘The Republic of the Imagination’(www.troti.org); The Republic of the Imagination is an intercultural network of creative citizens that acts as a meeting point for research into Context Oriented Arts.

While there is no fixed definition of Context Oriented Arts a working definition could be that it describes 'arts that invite us to fall awake to the miracle of being alive'.

I won a Creative Wales Award in 2006 for my work with Sensory Labyrinth Community Theatre, an applied theatre methodology I developed inspired by the work of Theatre Anthropologist Enrique Vargas, and I’ve created over 20 Labyrinth performances to date with communities internationally.

Theatr Cynefin’s 2005 project ‘Caerdroia’, saw the building of the biggest Labyrinth in the world in a forest in North Wales and is the training site for its Rites of Passage training for young people.

Prior to this I was Co-Director of Theatr Fforwm Cymru (1997 – 2004), Wales national Theatre of the Oppressed (TO). Whilst there I developed the project ‘Rehearsal for Reality’, which was the first ‘national’ Legislative Theatre project.

I’m among the founding members of ‘Drums for Peace’ (est. 1999) an international network of artists and creative youth workers who bring together disadvantaged young people on youth exchanges with the challenge of creating a performance in 5 days.

I’ve had the privilege to study with several teachers including Augusto Boal, Adrian Jackson, Douglas Harding, Tony Wiseman, Tony Parsons and David Bohm and have qualifications in film, psychology, youth work, dramatherapy and chi kung and have an MA in Mindfulness-Based Approaches to Health.
Location:
Cardiff, Wales
Projects I’m working on:
The Conference of the Birds - COT production in a Yurt touring internationally
Cerebellium - Cognitive Neuroscience meets theatre (in collaboration with Bangor University School of Psychology)
Heads Up Theatre - Theatre of the oppressed project based in Cardiff

Hi Iwan,
Yeah, real shame I missed the Food for the Gods Labyrinth...
Let me know of anything you do, my range of what's 'in the visinity' can be rather wide at times - in The Low Lands (Netherlands) at the moment & I love travelling - at times.
How are things with INFACCT going?
