Event Description

A one-woman drama and love story to the city that made her, How To Be Brave is a new play from writer Sian Owen (Pentabus, Oxford Playhouse, BBC Radio 4) and award-winning Welsh company Dirty Protest.

Touring Wales in March 2019:

Chapter, Cardiff: 13-16 March

Torch Theatre, Milford Haven: 19 March

Le Pub, Newport: 21-23 March

Galeri, Caernarfon: 27 March

Producer: Dirty Protest

Writer: Sian Owen

Director: Catherine Paskell

HOW TO BE BRAVE has been developed from our collaboration with Paines Plough, from our LATER performance of MANY HAPPY RETURNS at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017. The production follows Dirty Protest’s previous successes, including SUGAR BABY by Alan Harris (Roundabout, Edinburgh Fringe 2018, 2017 and international touring), LAST CHRISTMAS by Matthew Bulgo (Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and national performances) and award-winning PARALLEL LINES by Katherine Chandler (Wales tour).

This play is Katie’s journey as she begins to create an instruction manual for her daughter on How To Be Brave. Determined to listen to unheard voices and the city of Newport itself, she goes exploring to find what she’s really made of. The iron in our blood is made from exploded stars from the Big Bang, so she decides to harness the power of the supernovas in her body and seek the answers that she can pass on to her toddler daughter so she never loses the powerful, fierce determined magic she arrived into the world with.
