Event Description

Weather Gage by Yann Seznec www.theamazingrolo.net and Tasseography by Elizabeth Edwards and Adam Cooke are sound objects on the far end of Garth Pier, creating unique audio-scapes from discrete data gathered from weather conditions and human interaction.

The installations engage two different interactive approaches utilising micro controllers, situated in the two pavilions at the end of the pier. One work is reliant on natural elements whilst the other is reliant on human interaction. Both celebrate the pier as an active space where refuge can be sought.

Weather Gage
This installation harnesses the power of the wind to play a glockenspiel. A form of digital Aeolian harp, small propellors will generate tiny amounts of electricity, which will activate glockenspiel notes, creating polyphonic and polyrhythmic textures.

Tasseography
Tea, and its place in past, present and future forms the focus for this sound installation. The work seeks to conjure allusions of tasseography, the practice of fortune telling by interpreting the patterns formed by tea leaves in a cup. Using the language and symbolism of divination through the leaves, the piece suggests auditory pasts and futures. Teacup stands as oracle, but the trustworthiness of the reading is to be questioned. Artifice, illusion and fakery are after all other aspects of pier life.

The Garth Pier Tearoom is open from 10am to 4pm Thursday - Sunday and serves `The best scones in North Wales` according to Gabi Thoms.

This is a co-commission between Bangor Sound City www.bangorsoundcity.org and northern bloc
