Event Description

Dear Colleague

We would like to invite you to a rehearsed reading of a New Connections play on Sunday 11 April 2010.

New Connections is both a large-scale new writing programme and the largest of Discover's participatory programmes for young people. It has commissioned more than 120 new plays from established playwrights for performers aged between 13 and 19, designed to engage young people with the best new theatre writing.

In May 2010 New Connections will launch the next cycle of the programme for performances in 2011. Building on previous cycles, we want reach out to organisations and young people who were previously unable to participate in New Connections. As well as opportunities to perform, young people will be involved in all aspects of theatre-making, including stage management, set and costume design, lighting and sound operations, and marketing responsibilities.

The National Theatre is seeking 200 passionate and committed youth companies to take part in New Connections 2011. Each company will work with one of the ten newly commissioned scripts, rehearsing their production with the support of the National Theatre, presenting their production in their home venue before transferring to one of our Partner Theatres. Playwrights this year include Olivier Award winning Katori Hall, Samuel Adamson and Nell Leyshon. The Partner Theatre for Wales is Wales Millennium Centre who are working with the National Theatre for the second year running.

On 10 and 11 April, a group of young people will work with New Connections Director Charlotte Gwinner to rehearse DNA – a play by Dennis Kelly - in the Blackwood Miners’ Institute. Head for Arts and the National Theatre selected Caerphilly Youth Theatre to work with them again following on from the success of workshops on Lee Hall’s play The Pitmen Painters last year.

Dennis Kelly’s play DNA was originally written for the National Theatre’s New Connections programme in 2007. It tells the tale of a group of teenagers do who do something bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where’s the incentive to put things right?

We are delighted to invite you, or a member of your organisation, to attend the rehearsed reading of DNA at Blackwood Miners Institute, High Street, Blackwood, Gwent, NP12 1BB at 4.00pm on Sunday 11 April 2010. This will also give the opportunity to meet members of the New Connections team and discuss the programme further.
