Event Description

Now in its 3rd year, the ‘New Voices from Wales’ series produces 4 short documentary films which touch upon many aspects of everyday life in modern Wales, across all ages, races & culture. With each documentary helmed by some of Wales’s most exciting up and coming directors, these films are certainly not to be missed!

To celebrate the release of It’s My Shout and BBC Cymru Wales’ latest ‘New Voices from Wales’ Documentary series, a special premiere event will take place at Cardiff and Vale College on Tuesday 25th February 2020. This is an open event. The 4 documentaries that make up the ‘New Voices from Wales’ series are:

Believe: - Merthyr Tydfil has always been a town of strength. Since before the time of Dic Penderyn and the Merthyr Rising and all the way up to today, the people of Merthyr have always fought for something. Once upon a time Merthyr was heralded as the industrial capital of Wales. A town of Iron and Coal. Not only were its exports strong and tough, but so were the people who lived there, and still live there to this day. In a town where there currently isn't a lot of opportunities for people, especially young people, this documentary focuses on the fighters of Merthyr, specifically the MMA fighters that hail from the town, those who put themselves through such tough training and gruelling situations in search of success and a way out of the town.

Happy Naked People: - Tens of women in Cardiff make money by being a naked model. This old type of art came back into fashion and is attracting more and more fans. We meet Andrew, model event’s organiser and a model himself. We will question whether naked modelling deserves to be called art and whether it has a future in a world where nudity is available anytime online.

Pitch Perfect: - We follow Cardiff University's all-girl acappella group, 'The DeciBelles', as they compete against their male counterparts, 'Acappellads', to win the singing tournament, developed from the Pitch Perfect films. Inside of their little world, we will show you drama, love, sweat and success!

Skin Town: - In 2017 Paul “Skin” Phillips was known throughout the world of international skateboarding as a living legend! The Swansea born photographer had taken on the beast that was the American stake industry and won it over on his own terms. He had held the top spot at Transworld International skate magazine for over a decade and was now Team Manager for the newly formed Adidas Stake Team. Eventually diagnosed with a serious bipolar condition, Skin’s world began to quickly unravel. The pressure of years on the road and the fast-paced life of international skateboarding would eventually take its toll.

New Voices from Wales’ is produced for BBC Cymru Wales by It’s My Shout; a training scheme, based in Wales, that provides training for all ages interested in gaining experience in Film. They offer a wide range of opportunities in the creative industry, sharing experiences, skills and confidence with everyone.
