Event Description

Smash It Up is a direct response to the destruction of the Chartist Mural in Newport. But this is not merely about the loss of this popular piece of public art. What has replaced the public land where the mural stood is a private shopping centre with rules and regulations suppressing free expression. In exploring the loss of art and public space Mr and Mrs Clark with the artists Bosch have created an exhibition, a performance lecture, a dance theatre show with documentary and short film. Smash It Up has become a campaign, a series of public performances and an Amnesty International Award nominated show. Smash It Up is about our right to be creative and is a destructive plea for some cultural conservationism… perhaps an ode to the misunderstood, underrated artist. It is a challenging and uncomfortable demand for equality, for hope and for greater creative freedom and beyond all for an understanding and nurturing of the creative imagination.
