Event Description

Women Dancing 2015

This is the 2nd annual Women Dancing event from The Re-enchantment Project.

We invite all women who love moving, dancing or generally being alive to join us on the beach at Caswell Bay on the Gower Peninsular, South Wales for an act of celebratory activism in honour of the Spring Equinox on Sunday March 22nd 2015.

We will begin dancing at precisely 6am and dance the sun up (sunrise that day at 6.15 am). Arrive by 5.45 to ensure you are in time!

We welcome you whether you love dancing but never do or love dancing and do so at every possible opportunity. We welcome you if you love dancing and know you can or love dancing but think you can’t. This is about dancing for the joy of it, dancing as if your life depended on it, dancing because your soul needs to or dancing because that’s the only thing you can do in this time of global confusion and uncertainty.

We welcome you if you are in your first decade or your last. It’s about the feel not the look of what we do. Audiences on the beach at 6am will be few and far between so this is not a spectator sport nor is it a charity event or a world record-breaking contender. There may be two of us there may be two thousand. Those of us that turn up will be the right ones.

This is a dance of gratitude for the cycles of nature - to the sun for coming up, for the spring for coming round and for the sea for coming in.

This is freestyle beach dancing – waving arms and legs about, contemporary, extemporary, pogoing, whatever. The invitation is to dance to Patti Smith’s iconoclastic album ‘Horses’ which for forty years has represented one of the most powerful musical statements made by a female recording artist. This is similar to ‘silent disco’ in that we will all listen to the same music through headphones, dancing to the same tracks in the same order alongside one another (don’t press ‘shuffle’!). The invitation is to dance alone or dance with others. It’s not about the choreography it’s about letting yourself be danced and letting your soul play.

You can dance for the sea, the sand, the sky, the sun, someone you love or someone you’ve lost. The ritual will be the ancient rite of moving our bodies in celebration in the open air.

The sea will be roughly half way between low and high tide so there will be plenty of space on the beach. Download the album onto your music device, put on a black dress and press ‘PLAY’ at exactly 6am this will ensure we keep a collective timing. The record lasts for 43 minutes and 10 seconds. We will be finished and on our separate ways by 7am in the morning or bring a flask and share an early morning breakfast picnic! We will leave no footprints - or none that the sea can’t wash away.

Please send this invite to anyone who you think would like to come.

Until we meet on the beach
